He refused to answer, his expression pinched as he looked up once again to meet my eyes. “I never did understand everyone’s fixation with you. You were always just another silly girl, like hundreds before. Pathetic.”

I only saw the dagger glinting in the sun a split second before it was plunged into the side of <REDACTED'S> neck. Someone standing behind him. The jolt of shock that overcame him was palpable as his once-smug expression transformed into wide-eyed horror. Gasping as he gurgled on his own blood, Nibs immediately dropped his sword as he grasped at the knife in his throat, any cries he wished to make stifled by the flow of his own blood. “I don’t know,” <REDACTED'S> smug voice said from behind him, “best not to underestimate us silly girls, ye gabber prick!”

The sun in the sky is actually red, at 11am, because of the smoke in the air from northern Ontario wildfires. But sure various governments, great fucking plan to scale back environmental protections for the sake of oil pipelines while also pushing massive AI data centres to suck up our fresh water.

#PretendPanel 7/04 This is interesting to me because it can honestly vary, person to person, location to location, etc. Some characters will pop into my head visually fully formed. This was the case with Gwen from FiaVLT. Even though there's been a ton of images of Wendy from Peter Pan, it 1/7

Two things absolutely changed my life as a writer. You ready?

One- Your characters can be bad people, they can do bad things. There doesn't have to be a reason or a moral. You can make them bad if you want to. No other reason needed.

Two- it doesn't have to be good, it just needs to be written. On my last book i literally wrote the words "dumbest version" on the top of the page because I had seen some advice to do that. It changed everything. I stopped trying to make it perfect, I just tried to make it. Period. Full stop. You can edit bad writing. You can't edit a blank page.

And honestly? Defiance is the best writing I've ever done. All because I let my characters be bad and I gave myself the freedom to write it badly.

She caught herself looking at Amanda’s lips. Or rather, she caught Amanda catching her looking at her lips, and quickly looked away to take a sip of water, if only to try and calm the flush in her cheeks. She couldn’t help it, Amanda had been a fantastic kisser. When she looked back, she offered Amanda a sheepish look. “I’m sorry. That was weird. Is this weird?”
“What, this?” Amanda indicated the two of them. “Or this?” Moving her hand, she waved towards the downstairs, where Safi (who Max dated a while before Amanda) carried a box out to the truck, followed by Vinh (who Max had hooked up with a few times before and after Amanda) and Moses (who thankfully had never seen Max naked) each carried the end of a futon.
“Both?” Max replied with a cringe.
Amanda let out a small snort. “Oh, my sweet summer child. This is nothing. Did I ever tell you about my second girlfriend, Sloan?” Max shook her head. “At the time, she was living with two other people in a one bedroom apartment, both of whom were her exes and presently dating each other. Oh, and after Sloan and I broke up so she could get back with one of her roommates, the other woman, Jenn, ended up my roommate for two years.” Max’s jaw dropped, causing Amanda to laugh. “Helping my ex-girlfriend, and friend, let’s not forget that, move into her new apartment along with my ex…whatever Safi and I have been, and their occasional booty-call boy doesn’t even crack my top ten of weird relationship dynamics.” Amanda grinned at this, before her smile turned softer. Her eyes also drifted to Max’s lips—good to know she wasn’t alone in doing that—before she added in a gentle voice. “Don’t get me wrong, Max. I loved the time we had together. And it hurt when it ended. But that was months ago, and I’m a grown ass woman who can be friends with her ex. Especially one as cool as Max Caulfield.”

#Febchantment Day 28 Apologies for my posts getting sparse, I'm adjusting my brain to new meds, but I really wanted to make sure I did this last day because I've been looking forward to this one all month: Istemorian tattoo shadow magic! 😁 (2 images for alt text)

“Oh hells,” I whispered softly at the same time as Cameryn dropped to her knees, wrapping her arms around me to shield me. I heard Cameryn whimper in pain, felt her flinch but she pushed a sleeve up her forearm and slapped it, twice in succession and then a third time after a beat. Suddenly the shadows around us seemed to stretch and deform, taking on the shape of arms that wrapped around us and pulled, and the group of us sank into the shadows as if it were a pool of water. I couldn’t even manage a scream before everything went black.

I felt like I had slipped into my recurring dream, a world of black tendrils. Time seemed to stretch and twist around us. It became unclear how long we had been in that space. One minute, or weeks. I hollered at the top of my lungs, but there was no echo, it was completely swallowed up. I resigned myself that this was my existence now, the void.

And then, like nothing happened, the group of us were sitting in the shadow of a twisted old tree with gnarled bark, so unlike the pristine golden oak in the castle’s courtyard. I found myself kneeling in the grass staring at the bark for a moment, marvelling at how we came to be there at all. And then my stomach lurched and I bent over, violently ill.

Behind me, I heard a wheeze, and Cameryn groaned, “I am sorry. Transporting so many, and for your first time...it can be upsetting to the stomach…”

“How...what...what was that…?” I croaked, still spitting up foulness.

“Travelling by shadow...an ability of...Bronvyn’s tataedh…” Cameryn replied.

Reluctantly complying, I allowed myself a proper glance at the woman. Towering above me, her physique displayed an undeniable strength, evident in the glimpse of taut abdominal muscles peeking from beneath her tattered shirt. Intricate tattoos adorned much of her exposed skin, including a scandalous portrait of a naked woman, winking seductively, emblazoned on her forearm. And her face held an unconventional beauty, yet one that captivated me. I found it both delicate and sturdy all at once. There was something familiar about the shape of her face, the fullness of her lips, a feeling that nagged at the back of my mind, but I could not place it—a consequence of living for as long as I had was that similar faces surrounded me, echoing across the decades. The woman had a ruggedness earned from years at sea, crow’s feet kissing the corners of her eyes, while her hair was a mix of tight curls and softer waves, interspersed with the occasional braid showcased a blend of untamed wildness and elegance. One side of her head was shaved, a stark contrast to the cascading lengths of dark brown locks occasionally kissed by the sun on the other side, all accentuating her entrancing, rich brown eyes. Eyes that now widened in shock as they drank in my presence.

Happy #Febchantment 14! Sorry I've been silent the last few days. So, this is a first pass, and I think I want to make it scarier for the reader, because our MC Eva is scared! So, one of the bedrock rules of Vibration Bending is it cannot affecting people. Until her mother does just that. 😬😖

With agonizing slowness, my mother removed the veil she had worn through our awkward initial meeting with the Istemorians. “How. Dare. You.” The Queen bit out through clenched teeth, turning her cool eyes towards me.

“M-Mother, I…” I stammered.

“My own child, questioning me?” she continued, rising from her throne to look down upon me, towering over my form.

And then fear leapt into my throat as I was suddenly gripped by the hand of an invisible giant, unseen but seemingly no less real, and I was pulled out of my chair to my tiptoes, practically hovering.

Then, fear surged into my throat as I felt myself seized by the hand of an invisible giant, unseen yet no less tangible, lifting me from my chair to my tiptoes, rendering me almost weightless. My mother stood with a forward lean, one hand extended, trembling as it manipulated my very being. Around her even the tapestries nearby seemed to move as if someone had opened a window on a breezy day.

My mother was formidable, even intimidating, a living legend in the realm of Vibrational Bending. The greatest practitioner in centuries. It was a universally acknowledged truth, and still, the notion that she could also exert her influence over a living being, one possessing their own life force, was unfathomable. I never would have imagined such a thing, nor would I have envisioned my mother employing such magic against her own daughter.

After a maybe a minute of us gripping each other’s arms, just staring at the weird sight, Pan gave a roll of their eyes and waved us forward. Neither of us moved a muscle, and Pan instead pawed at the window, like when Muffin, the Rivière’s cat, does when she wants in from the cold. Something about the look on Pan’s face, the tilt of their eyebrows maybe, made Lucy let go and take a step forward. I was quick to grab her hand and whisper harshly, “Lucy, no!”

From the other side of the glass, a silky voice said, “Lucy, yes.”

Lucy glanced at me, but it was quick, like she couldn’t look away from Pan. She gave my hand a squeeze and let go with a soft, “It’s all right.” Then she moved to the window.

It wasn’t all right. How could it be, with the monster from Gwen’s story looking in at us, wanting to be let into the room. Was it my fault they were here, somehow? It felt like too much of a coincidence, them showing up so soon after Gwen told me how dangerous they were. Again, I kicked myself for not telling Lucy the story. Pan’s eyes were locked on Lucy as she moved to the window, and I began to feel my fingers start to tremble, like they did when I would look at mom in that bed before she...

Anyway, I just didn’t know what to do. I didn’t know how to keep the girl I...I didn’t know how to keep my best friend safe.

Lucy paused when she reached the window, leaning in as Pan offered her a friendly little wave.

Hi #SundaySnips! I'm sure I've shared this snip elsewhere in the past, but it's been a while. Hiding out overnight in a cave to stay out of the keen eyes on Pan's Lost Ones, Gwen & Hook spend the night getting to know one another, and Gwen comes to a revelation about the pirate. #WritingPrompt

Yet, in the midst of these revelations, I couldn't deny that the pirate stirred something else within me. I desired her. The fullness of her lips called out to me, the elegant curve of her throat beckoned, producing a scarcely remembered ache between my legs. But it went beyond mere attraction. My body yearned for her, craved her touch. It was as if I had become acutely aware of her scent, an intoxicating blend of the sea and exotic flowers. She smelled divine. Her heartbeat resonated with a tranquil rhythm, like that of someone at peace. Somewhere deep inside me, my own patchwork heart echoed her rhythm, my own unique song seeming to match up with hers.

She leaned against me, her closeness becoming more pronounced as the night progressed. Her half-lidded gaze repeatedly wandered to my lips, each glance a subtle invitation. I wondered if she even realized, if she could truly see them amidst the dimness of our surroundings. My own gaze danced between her tempting lips and the old scars on her throat, the rush of her blood underneath, calling to the predator within me.

Do not eat the beautiful pirate.

#Febchantment 7 Missed this yesterday because I had trouble settling on a snippet, but here it is. Eva & Cameryn are trapped in a crashing airship, & Eva has to try to turn the ship to limit the likely casualties. This is from an early draft, so not so happy with the prose, but still...

A shake ran through the ship, and it was enough for me to lose my handhold and start to fall, following Siv through the hatch. I had a flash of crashing to my death when a pair of arms wrapped around me and pushed me past the hatch to impact against what had once been the back wall of the cockpit with a wheeze. Looking over my shoulder, I saw Cameron, her eyes shut tightly, arms wrapped around me protectively. Trembling, the blonde girl shrieked “Ce’eri syn ar’dolga gira?!”3
I had no idea what it meant. At the time it was irrelevant. My mind was going a mile a minute. “If we crash going straight down the ship’ll be crushed! We all die!” I called out. Wriggling in Cameron’s grasp, I called out, “Let me go, I need to stand up! I need to do something!”
Complying, Cameron let me go and I forced myself to stand on the wall, balancing precariously on the shaking surface. Trying to calm my breathing, I set my stance and reached out with my life force, trying to grab onto the vibrations of the ship around me. It was so big, so heavy. This was crazy. I’d never tried anything this size before, but I thought about all the people down at the bottom that were about to die. I thought about needing to get to my Mother’s ship to check on her. I had so many reasons...I had to do this!

“Hold on tight!” I cried out to Cameron who immediately wrapped her arms around a pipe on the wall.
Closing my eyes and clenching my teeth, I could feel it, the barest hint of a grasp, but at least it was something, and I pushed forward. Something wet trickled from my nose and I tasted copper, but I couldn’t let it distract me. And then I felt it...I felt the ship turning. If I turned it back to its original direction, the bottom level would completely flatten, killing all the kitchen staff I’d spent the day working with. So I did the only thing I could think of. I turned the ship completely upside down, moving my feet along with the motion as my floor became a wall again, and the former ceiling became the floor, even as my legs began to shake.
I had managed to get the ship turned nearly all the way upside down before my knees gave out underneath me and I dropped. “Hold on!” I screamed. The last thing I remembered was a pair of strong arms wrapping around me, holding on tight, and then we hit the ground and the world went black.

The first night we met Peter, it was quite by accident. The fact was, Pan had been looking for someone else entirely.

It was mid-May of 1902. I remember because my youngest brother Michael had recently turned six and the scent of wisteria perfumed the air. At the time I shared a bedroom with my brothers. That evening mother and father were at a soiree, and my brothers and I played pirates much later into the evening than we normally would be allowed because of it. I was just drifting off to sleep when a soft, unfamiliar voice said, “Mary?”

I always prided myself on my bravery, and so when I opened my eyes to find a face within inches of my own, staring at me with golden eyes that seemed to glow in the dim room with the warmth of a candle's flame, I did not scream. I simply gave a soft exclamation and pushed myself back against my headboard, away from the mysterious figure. “Who are you?” I asked softly.

The figure, who appeared to be a boy to my eye, though I could make out few details in the dim light, tilted his head from one side to the other, brows furrowed. “My goodness, Mary, but you do look different. Were your eyes always that colour? And your hair, was it always so dark?” he said, ignoring my own question entirely.

I frowned. My mother’s name was Mary, but I quickly dismissed the idea that he could be looking for her. “My name is not Mary, boy, it’s Wendy. Now, standing alone before the Kyban, I felt incredibly small. I estimated I barely reached the height of the blonde’s shoulder. But it was more than just my stature...her stance exuded a sureness that made her seem even taller. After a moment of watching me she raised an eyebrow and said something in that musical, inexplicable language of hers.

This finally pulled me away from my thoughts and made me focus on the Kyban, prompting me to ask, “I’m sorry, what was that?” Offering a tightly polite smile, Cameryn took a step back and gestured to her left, toward the table and chairs where the Istemorians had been seated upon our arrival, her intention becoming unmistakably clear. I could sit. Moving in mirrored synchronicity, we each dropped into chairs across from one another, the woman immediately resting her elbows on the red oak surface, her fingers interlaced before her, her gaze piercing into mine.

Now that I was closer, I noticed details that had escaped me at a distance. A constellation of freckles scattered over her sun-kissed face, that one of her eyes held hints of green in it. A circular scar bisected one of her eyebrows, tracing the edge of her right eye, yet somehow, it seemed to compliment her overall appeal, rather than overshadowing it like mine. And oddly enough, I actually did catch a faint whiff of salt water coming off of the Kyban. It wasn’t unpleasant like I was expecting, however, and there was something else as well, vaguely floral and sweet like springtime cherry blossoms.

I became self-consciously aware that I may have been staring at her for too long, but what could we even speak about?

questions the idea that Blair is a girl, or that she'd be able to learn Bending. I kind of want to leave it ambiguous as to whether there's a real impediment to amab Bending that doesn't apply to trans & non-binary people or it's all propaganda, but I acknowledge I may have to make a decision.

I learned her secret one day when we were seven when my normally talkative cousin had been noticeably withdrawn. That week, my mother had started my instruction on Vibrational Bending, and I thought my cousin would be by my side just as she was for my history or mathematics or decorum lessons, and yet she had been notably absent. That was the first time she’d been barred from being by my side for being a boy. I assumed it was this division in gender roles that had upset Blaire, but it was so much more than that.
“No! You don’t understand!” She’d cried, turning away from me, “I’m upset because I should be allowed to learn bending, but I’m not. They can’t see it, none of you see it! Eva, I’m not a boy, I’m a girl!” I just wrapped her in my arms as she cried and told me how long she’d been holding in her feelings, about everything.
Up until that point, I’d given little thought to my cousin’s gender one way or the other, she’d always just been my other half, my veritable twin. Her telling me she was a girl…it just made sense to me. Of course she was a girl, it should have been obvious. I asked her if she wanted me to still call her the name she’d been known by up to that
