Post mostly about the ways evangelicals appropriate God to justify Tradition and political activism. "It is astonishing the lengths to which a person, or a people, will go in order to avoid a truthful mirror.” ― James Baldwin
The White Right likes to say anyone they wish to deny rights is too emotional. They can't handle race. Both these images are emotional, which is converted to violence??
When evangelicals use the word historical, its code speak for "true." All the books and movies recreating a "historical Jesus"; a "historical" Ark museum. But their historical Jesus didn't feed the hungry, heal the sick, have compassion on the poor. Douglass called it "Christianity of the land."
If white evangelicals can't enforce "what is good faith" we deserve to all be thrown in the untrusted category and never listened to again.
I woke up this morning thinking about prescriptive vs descriptive in Christianity. The last two people to use that were my pastor and the author Kobes Du Mez. But that's intellectualizing dissonance-what Jesus taught was how he lived, and he said christians should "be perfect", "love as he loved"
I prefer not to fight the Christian Right on this. The Country tapped God 4x to justify *their* right to freedom. Before the Constitution they racialized slavery, and in the Constitution they explicitly dehumanized Blacks as 3/5ths a person. +
Can you name one group for which sexual assault or violence against women isn't a concern? Try the 85% of white evangelicals who heard the access Hollywood tape and said "oh that's old" "thats locker room banter" "we give him a mulligan" Another mulligan for Stormy Daniels Another for Epstein
It's always Mom's Mom's is the place where you can kick back and she'll pick up after us and say "it was so good to see you..."
"They were going to deport her [Mom] to her home country and her children to a different country, "I can't get her out of my mind, I really can't." — Sr Rose Kuhn
My farmer middle son, visited yesterday to tend our yard and left this book on our hutch. He's an engineer w/ five yrs in; he & the other 7 uconn grads of his type were given offers by weapons makers, he chose a varied, small commercial co. for less $; with his first savings he bought "my land." +
Amazing Image. The members of the Patriot Front, whose "mission is a hard reset on the United States, calling for a return to the values of its forefathers by establishing a white ethnostate" had a mass demonstration today in D.C. But they're "all hat and no cattle."
Backyard flowers. credit to my middle son who has planted hundreds of flowers and trees. I'm not a green thumb; It's harder to mow now that I have all these obstacles; but I enjoy the fruits of his labor.
A little kindness to the poor in NYC has disturbed the hive of whiteness You want a really good question to divide bad faith from good faith? If only God can make a christian, is there anything stopping him from taking away that status? "They chose prophets who told them what they wanted to hear"
But as long as they're on top they don't have to examine their beliefs. They prefer as MLK Jr said 'a negative peace of injustice to justice'. I'll find the whole quote, he's so gentle with the people who are complicit in his beatings.
It's all they can do. James Baldwin understood whites as being enslaved to whiteness. And the thing he said {which I see all too clearly} is that 'as long as there is a white knee on a black man's neck, both are stuck, unable to walk away free'
Let me take you to Job. Job is caused to suffer, and he appeals to God for abandoning him in spite of his fulfilling all the law and he throws the law in God's face. This is what you told us is good. {And God chose Job bc he was good} Ya wanna know what pleases this God? Read the OT. +
He did it in uniform, that's his wheelhouse lol, we have preachers on this site who refuse to step up to the mic in their churches and draw a line between maga & christian Open your voicebox in your wheelhouse, in your sphere of influence; if you won't do it there, they won't know there is a line
W.E.B. Du Bois at 91, disillusioned that whites would ever extend the American Creed to Blacks, moved his family to Ghana. The 13th,14th,&15th amendments didn't prevent Jim Crow laws and lynchings. The Civil Rights Act and the Voting Rights Act didn't blunt racism; they drove it into code speak.
Ludicrous... This is what the Church is accepting if they recognize MAGA as Christians. Anyone can make God anything. It is impossible to know God, only what we believe about him.
Roadside wildflowers are the closest I'll ever get to understanding women and children in a war zone; no one cares for them, in fact they get mowed periodically and die In America, it's the Black family living in an environment systemically hostile to their growth. They do, with strength & beauty
The birds begin their calling at 5am. Refilling the feeders in the morning light, wandering amongst the plants my middle son has grown around the yard, there is such life even an old pot, on an old gardening table, where moss has taken root, reminds us that there is beauty in the mundane.
Trump is one of those guys who believe what they wear make the man. I learned two days ago that along the entire connecting corridor of his tacky renivation are bathroom stalls behind fake windows. As my architect friend asked, what kind of architect does that? It's all show and no substance.
honestly, conservative christians have been okay with bigotry for decades. Why will they care now? I would love LOVE to be proven wrong. Please‼️ Up on that lynching tree is a person, around the base in their Sunday best are spectators who didn't hold the body, tie it, or lift it; they kept aloof.
I did tell you he's amoral, right. He actually believes the lies are true; its his secret weapon; in some ways he learned it from creator of positive thinking, in other ways, its a shameless necessity of a psyche cauterized by a life of repeated failure.
The US was the largest single donor of humanitarian aid to the Palestinians too. Then the new admin stripped that to coerce them to the negotiating table; a spirit which always depends on 'the stick' can win in the short term, but it's already lost the war, it just doesn't know it.
