Last night on stream I noodled around with a first concept for a cover (and title!) for my comic, plus I finished Olivers expression sheet 🤪

Managed to color script scene 2 and 3 tonight! Can you tell based on these rough color thumbnails alone what happens in this part of the story...?

Thanks for hanging out during the stream! I did my first ever color scripts/gradings/plots/plans/whatever they’re called and it almost starts to look like a comic when you squint!

Pages 5-7 conclude the opening scene of my #raiden comic!

Page 5 - the top left panel shows Helena heating up her mug of tea using magic. She says: 'Perhaps you'll join the theater group one day? You make up stories all the time.'

A relic of self-indulgent OC writing without a plot or a plan - just because I enjoyed writing. I remember it being a lot funnier than it is 😂 Here's some 20 year old art + the original notebook!

The original notebook I wrote this story in back in high school. It has a light blue cover that I wrote 'Nameless Ares Story' on, plus a sunglasses emoji with a goatee. A friend wrote 'yo eef ^_^' in the corner. The edges of the notebook are frayed and torn.

One of my earliest digital illustrations, almost twenty years old. It depicts my OC Ares, shirtless, leaning backwards in a chair while messily drinking a glass of wine, his feet on the table. The setting is inspired by ancient greece.

The same OC, now wearing a black leather cuirass and a red tunic, standing in a white void holding a spear and grinning, his red cape waving in the wind.

My first ever drawing of my OC Ares, done over twenty years ago. It's a pencil sketch on a sheet of printer paper. Ares sits on the ground with one leg pulled up, holding his spear. He wears armor adorned with swirly patterns, and a helmet.

More adventures in bookbinding! The notebook I wrote my 'nameless Ares story' in during class 20 years ago is held together by half a staple and a dream at this point. Now here it is as a more permanent physical reminder to myself that I'm allowed to just wing it in the pursuit of fun.

The cover of my new hand-bound copy of the 'Nameless Ares story'. It shows a new illustration of Ares (my OC version of him), with short black hair and stubble, wearing leather armor and a red cloak and wielding an extremely tall sword. The lettering of 'Ares' is done in gold foil. The background shows the pin board in my work space.

A peek at the interior of the book, nicely typeset with ornaments around the page numbers and chapter headers. The text is in Dutch and describes an extremely snarky conversation between Ares and Hermes, who comes to tell him he's in trouble.

Made a neat lil progress tracker for myself. 20% feels like a lot when I see how much I still have left to do, but then again I didn't account for all the outlining, design work, and script-writing I've already done up until this point. So in actuality that 20% is lowballing it, if anything.

A graphic titled 'Raiden - a backstory comic' that lists the numbers 1-83 followed by color-coded 'buttons' for thumbs, color grades, lines, flats and details respectively. The 'thumbs' buttons have been filled in for all 83 pages, and the first four pages also have the 'lines' button filled in. In the bottom left is an illustration of young Raiden, the protagonist of this comic. In the bottom right is the total progress calculator, currently set at 20.9%

The first four pages of my ⁠#Raiden comic have been lined! Things are slowly starting to come together!

The bottom panels show seven-year-old Raiden grinning widely, showing a missing tooth, and then making his way back through the applauding crowd.

An old wizard in a market stall unfolds a scroll and says: 'Extraordinary spellwork, Tarrenwood, you have my thanks once again.' He hands the lady in front of him a small ornate box. 'Pleasure doing business, Alfonzo,' she says. The third panel shows young Raiden running up to his mother in the market, who examines a piece of paper from the box. 'What did you get?' He asks. 'A treasure chest?' 'Indeed, it might be,' she responds, closing the now empty box and handing it to him. 'You'd better find some treasure to put inside, then!'. Young Raiden looks excited as he takes the box.

We see the market from up above, as Helena strides forward and young Raiden follows behind her. Helena stops at another market stand, picking out mushrooms. The merchant hands a bag to her saying: 'Here you go, Helena, happy spell-crafting! So, how much longer till it's you up in that tower, huh?' Helena chuckles. The merchant leans towards her, saying 'I'm sure Ulyn is a fine arcane advisor, but he's such a windbag.' In the bottom panel we see young Raiden kneeling to pick up a feather in the foreground, while Helena walks away from the market stand in the background, saying: 'Tell the kids I said hi!'

We see Helena and young Raiden approaching a modest house. 'So what did you think of the performance?' asks Helena. 'It was alright,' replies Raiden. 'But this one only had a single sword fight.' They enter the house, which is filled with trinkets. 'Ah, what a shame,' says Helena as she unloads her bag. Raiden places the box on the table and moves to the book case, rummaging around for trinkets to put inside. The final panel is a close-up of his excited face as he holds up a ring with a small gem in it.
