He coughed, murmuring, "San Lang… Wanted to know what I like, so…" A wind chime of a laughter filled the room, just as kind and soothing. "You do? And I didn't know that? Never gifted you any?" San Lang snorted. "So that's how I learn I am a lousy mate." Xie Lian remembered a fresh white flower carefully tucked into the fractured fist of his statue, a similar web of cracks forming on the surface of his heart. "You did give me flowers," he whispered, not trusting his voice. "I liked them but didn't get a chance to tell you."$

The oxygen mask he'd put on the ailing asthmatic looked incredibly big atop Hua Cheng's sharply cut snout. His deathly pale lips were apart as he still struggled to inhale the air that was practically pushed into him, looking like the definition of the word 'miserable'. He smelled like paint and sweat, his long ponytail came undone, hair falling past his elbows in an uneven tousled cascade. Gone was the teasing smirk, and the officer was somewhat even missing the silly one of a smile doodle that he'd tossed into the muck at the river. Anything but this. He hated seeing a fellow human being rendered into a senseless shadow of himself.

Yet suddenly, cutting through the ocean of pity and empathy, a vicious current of anger swirled in Xie Lian's chest. Why the hell was Hua Cheng wearing only that flimsy little thing while working with spray paint? Surely he was aware of his condition. Surely he wasn't brain-dead from inhaling all the fumes to the point he'd consider that to be enough protection?

Curses remained hanging on the tip of the policeman's tongue like a string of malfunctioning fairy lights as Hua Cheng's head lulled to the side, leaning into his chest. His inky fringe parted to reveal a dirty old eye patch that sat on top of his right eye, something that should have been replaced ages ago unless one was practically begging to add an infection to whatever injury that warranted the use of said bandage.

Xie Lian briefly scanned the man's scruffy clothes, the sole of his fake Converse chuck that was flapping with every sway of his foot as though hoping to pass a casting to Sesame Street, the socks peeking out between the shoes and the pants, so thin the fabric was one strong gaze away from becoming lace.

A sigh ripped out of Xie Lian's lungs. It seemed that no, Hua Cheng couldn't have bought something less flimsy to cover his airways from the harmful toxins. It was a wonder how he'd been able to afford the paints at all, though despite his aversion towards prejudice, the constable could guess exactly how.

"Stand still, for heavens' sake!" Xie Lian grunted, holding the young man's wrists in a steely grip, unwilling to use any more force and thus cause any more pain if he were met with further resistance.

"As you wish, officer," the vandal purred, voice muffled by his black face mask, a silly smile design drawn on it warping as the man's mouth moved.

Yet the promise was as empty as the paint cans that were scattered around—evidence of the crime Xie Lian had been too late to prevent during his night shift. The lanky man moved, his back arching and pelvis bucking back, finding its target, Xie Lian's groin. The trick didn't work, it didn't hurt at all. But another bark or an order got stuck in his throat somewhere halfway towards freedom. The deviant comrade pushed his skinny behind further back, the friction it created deliberate, repulsive.

At least it should have been.

And yet it wasn't.

Just to think that some random person, pierced like a sieve, built like a stick-man, and, well, a man on top of that, could just go ahead and turn his stabilising diagnosis inside out. Perhaps it was his long hair that had caused such a dramatic effect, or maybe his husky, raspy voice. It could have been something else entirely, but the analysis was deemed to be postponed until bedtime, when Xie Lian was undoubtedly going to be unable to sleep, thinking about what exactly was it that was so wrong with him.

The same way the wooden spoon had struggled through overcooked congee Xie Lian had had for breakfast this morning, something stirred in the pit of the officer's stomach, twisting and turning, aiming to knock him out. In a fit of desperate self-defence, Xie Lian struck with his elbow between the man's shoulder blades, a pained grunt that echoed across the shore as the youth's chest got smashed into the wall pulling him back to reality.

xie lian is sitting beside him on the ground, his hair is though overgrown but rather short (sadly, because of his line of work). he's wearing a white shirt and blue trousers, his hand resting on hua cheng's shin. their wrists are chained together by handcuffs. to the left, there's hua cheng's tag, red and black, which spells 'crimson rain sought flower'. there are blue and red shadows to hint the presence of a police car, but the picture itself is very desaturated.

It was warm, Xie Lian realised, as though he wasn't currently cradled by a ghost but by a thousand suns, his heart tolling like a bell, the ground beneath him opening to leave him suspended in the safety of that gentle embrace. Jolts of sparks flashing before his eyes were so bright, he had to close them, his long eyelashes trembling under the weight of his tears. There was no use in any senses at that moment anyway as his entire world had narrowed into that single point where their lips were connected, the point that was engulfing him whole. And he easily, too easily, allowed it to do so, unable to resist as it whisked him away, refusing to feel anything but this sacred prayer that they were sharing right now, sprawled on the altar of the sleeping mat."

Summary

a snippet from chapter 17 of my fanfic to kill a god:

These thoughts, which Xie Lian deemed to be not his own, terrified him to the core regardless. Yes, he and Wu Ming were close, but not this close. He was happy with the state of things between them, he drank in their friendship as though it was the sweetest of nectars, as though he could live off their fleeting touches and domestic routines alone. He hadn't forgotten about Wu Ming's beloved, even if he had selfishly declared them dead when he had pondered Xiao Shen's origins shortly after their reunion. They might be dead, but this didn't mean Wu Ming wasn't still mourning them. Besides, if his reason to linger in this world was no longer there, he would have dissipated too, having lost his ghostly purpose. The existence of that person was thus a double-edged sword, cutting Xie Lian only there where it knew would hurt the most. Until now, he hadn't even realised how deep-rooted that strange ache was.

And Wu Ming… Wu Ming was utterly courteous with him, always making sure to give Xie Lian some face after any awkward situation, be it horse riding or sparring. The ghost had either found a way to offer a convenient out or simply pretended nothing had happened, which should have made Xie Lian, who despised himself for all those weird reactions of his body, happy. However, he was anything but because this only reminded him that Wu Ming's heart belonged to someone else; it reminded him that he was so extremely greedy that the man's deep devotion was not enough, that at times, he covertly dared to wonder what lay beyond that depth.

Snippet from the upcoming chapter of my wulian fanfic 'To Kill a God':

Is this my Bai Hua outfit? Xie Lian thought to himself, but although glad the robes did not go to waste, it was hardly the time to converse about fashion.

"I'm s-sorry, I—" Xie Lian stammered instead, unsure how to flee the situation while remaining respectful—they had caused a lot of trouble after all. He was also wondering what exactly 'taking care of' was supposed to mean, but decided he didn't really want to know.

As the wall of sheer fabric and powdered skin was approaching him, closer and closer, Xie Lian began to regret the immature amusement he had felt towards Feng Xin's behaviour around women back then. It turned out they could be truly terrifying. However, before he got smothered by an unholy amount of cleavage, Wu Ming stepped in front of him, his arm outstretched like a barrier between the panicked god and the eager courtesans.

Relieved, Xie Lian made sure to hide behind his valiant defender as he weakly muttered, "I am sorry; I am not interested."

The leader of the bosom gang levelled the two men with a knowing look. "Oh, so this is how it is… Don't worry, we have some talented boys around here who wouldn't mind accompanying you guys."
