I’m issuing an air quality alert for Calgary as we are being hit with wildfire smoke from probably three different clusters of fire currently. Wear an N95 or better respirator mask if you have to go out and run air purifiers inside.

According to a source familiar with the matter, 253 ballots were cast, with Derry winning by 70 votes.

Ward 2 Coun. Jennifer Wyness, who served on the previous city council, said a lobbyist registry is simply a “headline grabber” and won’t solve the issue the RCMP is alleging happened.

“I think what we’re seeing is council jumping to conclusions without allowing a police investigation to conclude,” Wyness said.

“When you go and make policy changes without allowing the RCMP to conclude its investigation, you are creating problems and opening doors for other negative impacts on council.”

Wyness noted councillors already disclose who they meet with in their offices.

‘Spitballing’ options isn’t helpful, says Coun. Yule

Ward 3 Coun. Andrew Yule said he wants to see these plans on paper. As a north-central Calgary councillor, Yule said it’s been frustrating to watch the process play out.

“We’re spitballing a project that’s been in process since 2014, and spitballing now, when we’ve studied this alignment to death, just feels irresponsible,” Yule said.

“We have an alignment, and we just, we need to follow it. I think a delay, like that’s all this is, is a delay tactic that will eventually kill the north leg.”

Many residents in Calgary felt their neighbourhoods were changing too fast as single-family homes turned into 4-8 unit townhouses or rowhouses. But what is incremental change when we're in the midst of a housing crisis?
Even at the peak of development activity, right around the time blanket rezoning was going into effect, the three most heavily impacted communities (Montgomery, Shaganappi, and Forest Lawn) were only seeing ~2% of their single-family dwellings receive development permit applications for a row home or townhouse.
In my books, that's incremental growth.
With it now being tougher to build the row houses and townhomes, the ironic side effect is that the buildings that do get built (along the nodes and corridors if that winds up being the approach taken) will have to be bigger than they otherwise would have been to accommodate the same amount of people, changing communities even more drastically... or more people pushed to the suburban fringe, increasing traffic, sprawl and all the other negative side effects that go along with it.

A former #yyccc city councillor once told me that one of the most straightforward ways to advocate to council is to remind them of what the city’s strategic plans already say because most councillors have no idea.

“Rezoning for housing, that obviously council reversed and repealed a couple weeks ago, represented several actions in the Home is Here strategy,” Hendry said. “That’s the delta between what’s been completed this time last year versus right now.”
