“Maybe we should try therapy,” Oliver says, in lieu of any sort of greeting.
“Now’s not a good time.” She watches the mechanical winch lift the chandelier higher. It’s nearly to the three-story-high ceiling. “You know that.”
Marco escorts Jasmine and Destiny out, and Katya forces a smile and a wave to the couple.
“Will you consider it, at least?” Oliver’s voice quavers, as if he’s not sure he wants to know if she’ll say yes. The funk of their relationship woes hangs over her like a ghost. Why can’t things be as easy as they seem to be for Destiny and Jasmine?
Destiny mouths something as she walks by. Katya freezes for a moment. Haunted. Is that what she said?
Then Katya’s mind catches up, and she realizes Destiny was mouthing highlight. Highlight of her day.

“Lottie, what’s wrong?” The nickname pulled her smile down.
“I think we need to consider the future of the farm, Noah.”
He swallowed back the next joke and nodded. Pausing, he finally forced out what he had been thinking but hadn’t wanted to voice. “We might need to think about selling.”
“What?” The shock on her face wasn’t unexpected. The anger was.
“Lottie, I think, maybe….We just need to consider—something.”
The shift in her mood was a frost, freezing the room and the crops outside. “You’d just give up on all of this then?”
A thunderstorm swept through him. “What do you mean?”
“You’d just abandon what Mom and Dad built?” He tore out of the house before he said something to her that he’d regret later.
He slammed the screen door behind him and was halfway through the soybean plots before he calmed down enough to stop. Wincing, he lifted his boot off of a trampled plant and reached down to see if he could salvage the broken leaves.
The bean pods rustled, though Noah couldn’t feel any breeze. He leaned toward the plant but didn’t get too close; he didn’t want a face full of grasshoppers or moths. Somewhere in the distance—muted—he thought he could hear muttering. The burnt-bark smell of the bean plants made him a little dizzy, and he crouched lower to try to get the feeling to pass. The murmuring grew louder the closer he got to the ground.
One of the pods split open, and the voices tumbled out into the air, clamoring for dominance.
Instead of beans, the hull cradled rotten, shrunken skulls. They writhed and grunted, bumping into each other and shifting for space in the narrow bed. Skin stretched and tore as they groaned; muscle pulled taut and snapped, unhinging miniature jaws. He gasped, and the heads turned toward him. Clouded eyes stared at him, and the words grew in volume. If he listened close enough, they sounded like a television left on in another room, like if he paid enough attention, he would be able to make out what they were saying.
