I don't want to make fun of Vance for reading The Chronicles of Narnia in a combat zone, or for his longing for an Aslan-like relationship with Christ, but I will point out that Vance's version of Christianity has turned out to pretty far afield from anything Lewis would recognize.

He uses living wage laws as an example of things that are just an unknowable mystery, akin to angles dancing on the head of a pin! Some say they would help! Others say not! Who can say? JD Vance's book about his faith busts out the "well, how do we really know ANYTHING" (aka "science is a religion, too!") argument but it's really clumsy. He specifically carves out Holocaust deniers bc "few have done any original research"[!] Also, some facts are too "well accepted" to contest?

Depression makes life so small: Isolation, fatigue, brain fog, the yawning
self-pity that makes it difficult to stretch out to others. I can spend weeks
feeling like I'm living underground.
It's so strange how getting out of it is to realize the smallness is not your
fault. You do what you can do.

These are people whose cause was literally to NOT be a part of the United States of America.

Political trade-offs are evident when Vance recounts his history lessons on America's own civilizational greatness, particularly those surrounding the Civil War. While Confederate generals fought for the "wrong cause" and Union generals for the "right cause," he notes, the Confederates were "strategically brilliant" and "tragic in their heroism." And, really, both sides helped build the nation: "Whether our great-great-great-grandfathers fought for Grant's or Lee's army, we learned that their actions that day had made it possible for us to be part of a United States of America."

Week three is a bit of a personal update but mostly a trip down a short byway in lithium history: The story of lithium pioneer John Cade and his unfortunate guinea pigs. Cade's research entirely misguided, and he found a cure for bipolar disorder anyway. www.patreon.com/anamariecox2...

At some point, he divined that the urine of manic patients was
especially lethal. Modern scientists have not replicated this result-
injecting enough of anyone's urine into a guinea pig will end badly. But
this mistaken finding was exactly the confirmation Cade needed to
proceed down the road he'd chosen. He took on a vigorous if not
rigorous regimen to narrow down what combination of urine
metabolites caused mania and an agent to act on them. His methods
were unorthodox and remain difficult to recreate. As Konstantinos
Fountoulakis, author of "The Rise of a Legend: Lithium and the
Extraordinary Story of Its Discovery" notes: "Cade embarked on a
series of experiments without following an entirely logical or readily
understood sequence."

The phlebotomist taped down the cotton swab with neon pink gauze, a high contrast to well-used grays of the small booth we were in. She’d filled three vials with my dark red blood and was writing my name on a label.

“That was relatively painless,” I told her. “Most people have trouble finding my veins.”

“I have a lot of practice,” she said, placing the vials in a tray and clinking it into a cart. She smiled. “I’m Regina.”

“I’ll be back a lot. I’m on lithium.” She nodded. I finished, “It needs to be monitored closely.”

“Well,” she said, “You are ingesting a toxic metal every day.”

The Trump Justice Department slush fund for 1/6 criminals would be modeled on the Obama administration’s compensation program for indigenous farmers. They’re literally doing reparations for the QAnon Shaman.

The Justice Department is modeling the program, in part, on a landmark $760 million settlement fund the Obama administration created to compensate Native American farmers and ranchers who were deprived access to federal subsidies for decades, one of those people said. Payments in that settlement came from the Judgment Fund, an uncapped pot of money that does not require congressional approval to make payments and is maintained by the Treasury Department.
