Gwynfor Evans' famous quote has a specific context. It refers to Anglo-British cultural and political Imperialism which imposes itself on these isles. In that context, I agree with him. 3/11

That I can put down to dogmatic stubborness. However I draw the line at casually quoting Enoch Powell in support of his view, even his more innocuous utterings. Dr John has long been critical of Plaid Cymru. I had my suspicions why. I find his casual preparedness to quote Powell to be revealing 2/2

Mike Hedges is clearly a student of Aesop, notably the story of sour grapes. As
Enoch Powell once put it: “A politician to complain about the media is like a sailor to complain about the sea”
The voting system about which he complains at length was an invention of his party, designed as a sop to proportional representation but designed keep Labour in power.
Ironically, it was opposed by many in the Labour Party. The chickens have come home to roost.

Better read as "despite being a party of Welsh Democracy ..." Nationalism a cheap pejorative for folks raised to believe the rump British Empire represents progressivism.

Plaid Cymru - despite being a "nationalist" party - represents a diverse and inclusive Wales that is forging ahead with its own idea of national identity against a rising tide of rightwing populism. You don't have to be a Welsh speaker to be part of the project. Plaid won even in areas with historically low numbers of Welsh speakers, such as Ebbw Vale
