Author of 26 non-fiction books, including NAVIGATING THE MESSY MIDDLE (a book about midlife). Trying to teach myself how to write my first novel. Passionate about democracy and social justice.
Savouring what’s left of summer by taking in the view at Petawawa Point — one of my favourite spots in the Ottawa Valley. ✨
Love the pout on this turtle 😂 (He showed up on my dinner plate at a Thai restaurant.)
This isn’t my usual kind of reading material (I’m not a particularly religious person) but I found this book to be both soul-nourishing and comforting. Each line reads like poetry and the ideas the book explores are transformative. Thank you @maggiehelwig.bsky.social 💗
Imagine investing billions of tax dollars in an industry that is doing everything it can to eliminate jobs. 🤦🏻♀️ This is from an interview @avilewis.ca did with @breachmedia.ca earlier this year.
The farm sprinkler meditation video you didn’t know you needed. (I found it super-soothing to watch the sprinkler moving back and forth while I was out for my late-afternoon walk. I hope you enjoy it, too.)
I had to snap this photo quickly before the mosquitoes carried me away but I couldn’t resist dashing outdoors to savour this sunset. ✨
In our front yard: a large and previously healthy pine tree snapped like a twig. #OttawaValley #RenfrewCounty
So gorgeous… 😍 The trilliums are so abundant and so lush right now. Here’s a photo I took yesterday while I was walking in the woods.
This month’s co-op order (from the Ottawa Valley Food Cooperative). We order online at the beginning of the month and then pick up our order a couple of weeks later. It’s a fun and delicious way to support local food growers/producers.
Spotted this gorgeous Little Library on a residential street in Oakville, Ontario. I love the fact that it features a matching bench. I was also thrilled to spot a book by Chris Hedges. Not your typical Little Library fare! #LittleLibrary
When the sky is this blue, it seems to go on forever. I snapped this photo when I was out for a walk in the forest but the "endless sky" vibes were even more noticeable when I was driving across the city. It was truly awe inspiring. ✨
It was a picture-perfect spring day so I decided to take a hike on a trail I had yet to explore at Shaw Woods (near Eganville). The entire walk was beautiful. This particular trail dips in and out of the forest while winding along the banks of the Snake River. #OttawaValley #RenfrewCounty
I spent an hour this afternoon heaving rocks so I could repair the stone fence that wraps around the gazebo. We go through this ritual every spring. The groundhog tries to move in under the gazebo. We try to discourage him by adding rocks to the fence. It’s basically a season-long chess match.
The groundhog has returned. (He’s taking full advantage of the fact that the birds aren’t exactly neat eaters.)
If the sound of moving water energizes you, please accept this invitation to be energized…. It was so great to be able to make our way through the forest and back to the creek again. There’s still a bit of ice and snow on the trails but it’s not nearly as treacherous as it was a few days ago.
Celebrated International Day of Forests in the best possible way — by going for a walk in the forest. 🌲 #ForestDay
It was a gorgeous day for a walk in the woods. There are so many signs that spring is on its way but today it was a winter wonderland.
Thank you to the Ontario Arts Council, for their ongoing investment in my development as a fiction writer, and to Biblioasis, for recommending me for a 2025-26 Recommender Grant. I am so grateful for your support! 😍 cc @ontarioarts.bsky.social @biblioasis.bsky.social
I am happy to report that the sourdough raisin bread turned out really well. The texture and the flavor are great. I’ll definitely be making this again. #BreadSky
There is a thick layer of ice on top of the snow so we were able to walk in the woods without snowshoes. The trees looked like they had been dipped in ice.
