First season of severance was pretty good but the way it builds to them getting out but then to be brought right back in really puts a damper on the story. Like nothing really got to progress. Helly being one of the more frustrating situations of it because (spoilers, not gonna say it).

But there are just some iconography that define it's existence and can be associated to ONE point of origin. The sailor moon wand and it's concept is always going to be a "sailor moon transformation scene" (for westerners). Most people are going to connect the two together, even if you say it's not.

The benefit of SU is being inspired by Sailor Moon but not trying to copy it directly. And that's not to say that making a show with similar tropes from magical girl animes and turning them on it's head isn't bad either. The plot of THAT SHOW is to hope your audience understands the reference.

Like Lars in the stars maybe will come out one day, and it'll have some original concepts, but the pitch is just space pirate captain harlock but made for Steven Universe fans. I'd rather just read/watch/learn about Captain Harlock instead if that's much of an inspiration to your narrative.

Apparently the missing cheek blush WAS a mistake. This thread was addressing that. People (including myself) legit suggested that it was evidence for a body swap episode. Which I still think is possible, but we were over thinking a simple a mistake like it was evidence for something important.
