SAVE THE DATE!! I’ll be launching my chapbook. A Mudlarker’s Diary on the Public Domain on Thursday, August 6, from 7:00-9:00 pm. I’ll be joined by the very smart and very good Hannah Godfrey, Talia Syrie and Anucyia Victor Kitching. John Toews will heckle/host. Fun!
Old blue and white china sherds on an old b&w tea towel. While washing them, I tend to sort finds by material: stained glass scrap in one pile, chunks of glass headed for the rock tumbler in another, little beautiful things like buttons and beads and drips of bonfired glass.
Tonight, Winnipeggers! Come help Calgary writer Anna Veprinska launch her latest book, Wound Archive (The Porcupine's Quill), with the support of Melanie Brannagan Frederiksen and myself, reading new work.
David and I were in a writing group when we were in our 20s and I’m so proud of him now, for launching his first book. If I wasn’t hosting, I’d be heckling from the audience!
This morning, I strat-planned with the MWG. But I spent the rest of the day reading a PDF of @davidjonfuller.bsky.social’s novel Venue 13, which will launch June 4 at @mcnallyrobinson.com.
Though I had heard reports from others, I hadn’t yet seen any prairie crocuses myself this long cool spring. But as I drove to Sandilands Provincial Forest this morning, hoping that there might be morels, I knew that I would probably see them. And I spotted them from the car!
So last night was the farewell reading marking the end of my writer in residence term at the Winnipeg Public Library. I got members of my Writing Circle group to read with me — Karen Macintosh is shown here — and they all read very well.
So I'm having my WPL WiR farewell reading on Wednesday and I didn't advertise it because I didn't want to confuse people, what with the Writes of Spring event on Sunday. BUT: If anyone wants to come hear me read, I would be absurdly grateful.

So here are the 2026 Writes of Spring poets, with myself & @melanie-b-f.bsky.social as co-editors, at @mcnallyrobinson.com yesterday. It was a great afternoon of poetry and community and I’m so glad I’ve gotten to do this, 11 years in a row.
Tomorrow at @mcnallyrobinson.com! (And today in the @winnipegfreepress.com!) #poetryforever
So W&W published two of my CNF books about trees and mushrooms, the city and the urban forest and I am grateful to them for their inspiring books which directly led to my books but also for their ethics and their relationship-building.

It's time — submissions for the 2026 Manitoba Book Awards are now open! This year, we’re thrilled to be offering six awards.
Since 1989, we’ve been able to cultivate an amazing community of emerging and established writers, and we’re so excited to be resuming this journey.
It’s official. After a two-year hiatus, the Manitoba Book Awards are returning to our province! Our mission is simple: we want to uplift, recognize and award noteworthy Manitoban writing and celebrate books written and published in our province.
Manitoba poets! The deadline for Writes of Spring is Monday, March 30, which is also my 53rd birthday. So: won't you PLEASE gift me with me with some land and sea-themed poems? #nationalpoetrymonth #NPM #NPM2026

If anyone wants an Odd Bunch referral link, I've got one to share. It's a new fruit/veg delivery service, where they work with local farmers/coops and rescue ugly/unwanted produce. And they’ve just started delivering to Manitoba… (The picture is of the Large Mixed Box, freshly opened...)
