Don't forget to check out the Artifact of the Month for August: Moonshine Barrel Hoops from Seven Hollows! You can read the article on our website: archeology.uark.edu/artifacts/mo...
Have you ever wondered what 6000 tri-fold brochures laid out on a table in stacks of 100 looks like? Now you know! We created this brochure as a brief overview of Arkansas history based on George Sabo's 2021 book, "Ways of the Ancestors".
Despite being retired since 2024, Dr. Jami Lockhart (ARAS-Emeritus) is still giving presentations for the public! He presented about his research in Arkansas for the Tales and Traditions speaker series at the Fayetteville Public Library a couple of weeks ago.
Don't forget to check out the July Artifact of the Month on our website: archeology.uark.edu/artifacts/re...
We had our annual staff retreat last week and 3 employees were recognized for Outstanding Service to the Organization this year. From left to right: John Samuelsen, Brittney Bostian, and Emily Bartz. Congratulations and thanks for a great year!
Yesterday we said goodby to our lab technician, Katelynn, who is going off to grad school in Oklahoma. You'll do great, but we'll miss you!
Here's a great article from Ouachita Life about our research station at WRI. "...to be an archeologist is have one of the best jobs in the world: teaching people in the present how to appreciate their past." (One note, the greenhouse was never near Rockhouse cave, there was some confusion there.)
The TACL students got the chance to visit the University of Arkansas collections facility and speak with curators Laurel and Mary. They have also had the opportunity to speak with archeologists, curators, and other archeology professionals from around the country.
TACL Archeological Curation Field School is starting off strong. We've washed and sorted artifact, gone through terms, started readings and today we learned about flint knapping and stone tools from Mike and Jared in preparation for taking on an assemblage filled with lithics.
Really neat, large chunks of cane impressed daub coming out of some of the features that we are excavating. Good thing our trowels are sharp, and we have our excavation tools organized!
We got the opportunity to learn about microstratigraphy this week from Dr. Sarah Sherwood (The University of the South). She took samples in the field and gave a lecture one evening.
We had members of Quapaw Nation come out to help with excavations & present about Quapaw History at our Open House. We love getting to work with so many great people & getting to learn from & spread knowledge to each other & the community where we are working each year during the Training Program.
The second week of the Training Program in Archeology is starting out strong recording the many features in the plaza excavation! If you aren't signed up to participate, you can still visit Plum Bayou Mounds Archeological State Park and see the excavations if you come out while we are working.
We had a successful first week of excavations, lab work, and classes at Plum Bayou Mounds! Thanks to everyone who came out.
Lots of learning and interesting artifacts happening at the Training Program this week. Come out to our Open House tomorrow from 9am-1pm to see what we've been up to!
We've uncovered the feature that we found last year and re-covered. Now we'll be able to do a more thorough investigation. If you want to know more about what you thought about it last year, check out Dig Director, Dr. Paige Ford's, closing talk from last year: www.youtube.com/watch?v=23ol...
The humidity is rough, but the sun sure is beautiful for the Training Program at Plum Bayou Mounds.
New Month, New Artifact of the Month! To go along with the Training Program, we're featuring a Coles Creek Incised Bowl from the Plum Bayou site! Check it out on our website: archeology.uark.edu/artifacts/co... and then visit the Training Program in person and see what we're learning this summer.
Rachael and Sandra have registration under control and are ready to check you in at Plum Bayou!
We're getting ready for everyone at Plum Bayou! Visitors will be welcome to get close to the excavation areas through these kinds of marked paths. Archeologists will be there to tell you about what is being excavated in that area of the site. Work starts on Saturday!!
