It's nice to have the Rosslyn bus tunnel open again following a two-month construction project at Central Place Tower 🚍

The Rosslyn bus tunnel between N Moore St and N Lynn St. There is a single traffic lane that provides one-way access for buses getting on N Lynn St from the Rosslyn bus bays.

We can once again enjoy an unobstructed cycle track on Fort Myer Drive in Rosslyn 🙌

A two-way cycle track along N Ft Myer Dr in Rosslyn that no longer has signs plopped in the middle of it.

A properly-oriented sign reminding drivers of state law to stop for pedestrians at crossings.

Thank you again for bringing this to our attention. We have had the signs removed from the cycle track. We are aware that they are now placed to convey that the vehicles must yield to bikes and pedestrians and we are working with the property managers along that block to explore appropriate messaging for all users.

This is now 13 months into what was originally scheduled to be an 8-month project by the property owner at 2425 Wilson Blvd. I have opened multiple tickets for MOT issues here during that time. Recently, the bike lane closure warning was removed despite the bike lane looking like this:

The driver of any vehicle on a highway shall stop when any pedestrian crossing such highway is within the driver's lane or within an adjacent lane and approaching the driver's lane until such pedestrian has passed the lane in which the vehicle is stopped: 1. At any clearly marked crosswalk, whether at midblock or at the end of any block; 2. At any regular pedestrian crossing included in the prolongation of the lateral boundary lines of the adjacent sidewalk at the end of a block; or 3. At any intersection when the driver is approaching on a highway where the speed limit is not more than 35 miles per hour. A violation of this section is a traffic infraction, except that a violation of this section that results in serious bodily injury, as defined in § 18.2-51.4, to or the death of a vulnerable road user, as defined in § 46.2-816.1, who is lawfully crossing a highway is a Class 1 misdemeanor. B. When a vehicle is stopped pursuant to subsection A, the driver of any other vehicle approaching from an adjacent lane or from behind the stopped vehicle shall not overtake and pass such stopped vehicle.$

N Moore St was once again at a standstill during the morning rush today. Regularly having only the bus lane passable while buses from six different routes are making stops at the bus bays is not great 😔

What is going on here? I'm thinking the hotel rather than the county installed these nonsensical signs. The cycle track is crossing a driveway, not a crosswalk. If the message is intended for drivers, the signs would be oriented the other direction and placed outside the cycle track.

To prevent similar tragedies, my recommendation is to separate the turning and crossing signal phases by converting the right lane of the Ft Myer Dr approach to right turn only. Squaring the intersection skew could slightly improve safety but does not eliminate what is a dangerous conflict. (7/7)

The shared-use path where the incident occurred connects to the first segment of the Fort Myer two-way cycle track. This corridor will eventually provide convenient connections between the Key Bridge, Custis Trail, Gateway Park, and the rest of the Rosslyn bike network. (6/7)

The 1900 Ft Myer Drive, 1901 N Moore St, 1901 & 1911 Ft Myer Drive, and 1401 Langston Blvd sites are delivering a total of ~3,500 homes adjacent to Gateway Park. This combined with the renovation of the park means a lot more people using all modes will frequent this area in the future. (5/7)
