Some new goodies arrived today ahead of Swallowing awareness day next week. Already got some new videos planned.
Discussing how to manage aphasia to second-year students today. Students took part in a PACE activity as client/SLT to demonstrate the difficulty in communicating something as simple as their favourite movie. Can you guess the movies from these pictures?
One for next year's teaching but happy to receive an inspection copy of Gilbertson and Henson's new book. Nice to see a resource which reflects the diversity of clinical caseloads (i.e. cognitive-communication disorder, prolonged disorder of consciousness, challenging behaviour)
A new week and Caroline Bowen and Pamela Snow's new book has just arrived on my door step. One for those who have, or work with, children with additional needs. Hope it is as good as the previous Making Sense which I thoroughly enjoyed!
Just received this today and looking forward to reading my former colleague Claire Hartley's chapter on communication following a stroke in collaboration with the South Birmingham (BCU) Conversation and Family Group. Congratulations! Whole book looks excellent & very practical book for AHPs & nurses
Assessing first-year physiotherapy and speech and language therapy students presentations this morning/lunchtime then a SLT staff meeting in the afternoon. Received my teaching qualification in the post too! #mySLTday #bskySPEECHIES
Nice to see some pay off for the hard work over the last couple of years. Finally received confirmation and final grade for teaching qualification. A distinction! #mySLTday #bskySPEECHIES
Fantastic #AHPsDay. Recorded videos with a colleague for upcoming dysphagia simulations. Manned the speech and language therapy table with @bammo44.bsky.social at university, and spoke to lots of students and other staff about the profession. #mySLTday #bskySPEECHIES
First day of induction week. The wait is finally over! Met new students. Campus bustling. #mySLTday #bskySPEECHIES
Attended Keele University's SimFest conference yesterday. Good chance to meet wide range of healthcare colleagues across the university and region, and see range of approaches to simulation. #mySLTday #bskySPEECHIES
Away for the weekend and picked up some excellent books in a charity shop and another in a cheap book shop. Staff meeting today then continuing to work on my teaching qualification coursework. #mySLTday #bskySPEECHIES
Varied day meeting new SLT colleague, and physiotherapy colleagues to learn about modules I will be teaching on, admissions process, clinical placements. Peer reviewed an article. Picked up Kate Darbishire's Speechless in a charity shop. Will have to give it a read. #mySLTday #bskySPEECHIES
First day at Keele University. Very different kind of campus / environment to teach in. Looking forward to September. #mySLTday #bskySPEECHIES
Final teaching session with first-year master's students on (assessing) cognitive-communication disorders before I join Keele University on Friday. Lovely card from some of my apprenticeship students #mySLTday #bskySPEECHIES
Just received an inspection copy of Tessa Ackerman's Navigating Aphasia. I look forward to reading it.
Getting through the rest of this quarter's RCSLT Bulletin. Really enjoyed Fiona Aspray's article on supporting people with learning disabilities to vote in the 2024 general election. Topic close to my heart having done this myself in 2019. Excellent support provided. #mySLTday #bskySPEECHIES
Nice to see apprenticeship student Emily in this quarter's RCSLT Bulletin discussing practical examples of making medical information / procedures more accessible for people with learning disabilities. #mySLTday #SLTatBCU #bskySPEECHIES
Last teaching session with the third-year apprentices looking at assessing communication in patients with a traumatic brain injury. Meeting undergraduate and apprentice students for 1-1s to provide pastoral and academic support for the rest of the day. #mySLTday #bskySPEECHIES
The joys of buying second-hand books. Someone who makes as many notes as I do. 😂
Lovely feedback from one of my students on my research module this afternoon. Fingers crossed they all do well on their exam on Friday. #mySLTday #bskySPEECHIES
Interesting session today on ventilators and tracheostomies (and airway adjuncts and oxygen therapy) to second-year undergraduates. Average confidence ratings about knowledge increased from 2.5 to 3.9. Lots of equipment to have a look at and play with. #mySLTday #bskySPEECHIES
Applicant taster day today. Busy with lots of (hopefully) future students. Gave a talk on introduction to dysphagia rehabilitation with practical activities. #mySLTday #bskySPEECHIES
Anatomy and physiology session on traumatic brain injury with first-year apprenticeship students. Session also observed by a colleague for my teaching qualification. Received some very positive initial feedback. Prep for a research session next week. #mySLTday #bskySPEECHIES
One of my favourite days: exploring mental health with apprenticeship students (conduct disorder, anxiety, selective mutism, social anxiety, OCD, eating disorders, gender dysphoria). Consistent improvement in student's confidence/understanding of MH after every session #mySLTday #bskySPEECHIES
Interesting day discussing intervention approaches in mental health with the master's students. Interview. Admin. Marking coursework. #mySLTday #bskySPEECHIES
Lovely visual resource produced by first year students to support a conversation session with clients with aphasia. #mySLTday #bskySPEECHIES
First proper teaching session with new apprenticeship students discussing the basics of research and evidence-based practice. Lovely lot. Really engaged and generous sharing their thoughts and experiences. #bskySPEECHIES #mySLTday
Apprenticeship review meeting. Several collaborative working with the third sector sessions run with Sarah from Headway Birmingham and Solihull for third-year students. Awesome improvement in confidence after session for both groups. Finished the day with a placement midway meeting. #bksySPEECHIES
Planning teaching session with charity. Interviewing prospective undergraduates. Assessing master's students dissertation presentations (one brought props!). Apprentice review. Planning for OSCE on Monday. #mySLTday #bskySPEECHIES
