Got a gig offer to play a brunch for tips, in one of the wealthier towns in NY state, on one of the most lucrative days of the week for musicians, coming up on one of the most lucrative months. Response below. Pay artists for their work.

Tip-based, meaning that the musicians you hire will depend on tips to get paid?

I realize you simply shot this email out to anyone who ever sent you materials, without regard to how far away from Croton-on-Hudson they live.

It would involve a minimum of 3 hours of driving for me, total. Plus tolls. Gas is nearly $5 a gallon now. Then I'm expected to hope that enough rich people want to cough up enough nickels to cover my expenses? On a Saturday, the most lucrative night of the week, to boot? This is offensive. Even if I lived next door, it would still be offensive.

I took a look at your menu. No couple is getting out of your brunch without dropping over $125. The median income for a family in Croton-on-Hudson is over 250K. I'm sure you can find a couple hundred bucks to throw to the musicians.

Will you be getting paid a salary, or will you be begging for tips?

Will the waitstaff be getting paid a wage, or will their pay be "tip-based" since this is new? And, how do those two things equate? After it's not new, will you be paying musicians?

If the answer to the two questions above is "yes, the waitstaff and I are being paid a wage", why would you shaft artists? And I don't mean amateurs who are hungry for attention and willing to work for nothing, I mean trained professionals with many years experience. Professionals who depend on music for their livelihood. If you want substandard music for your brunch, you're setting yourself up to get just that.

Music is a profession. Pay musicians.

Luddites unite. Stole it from grandma in '93. It took a dive off a shelf, replaced the plastic, nicotine stained clock face, lens and knobs. What actually wakes me up is not the radio, but the nice, loud CHUNK of the switch. Then, speed metal on WFMU gradually fades in as the tubes warm up.
