the closest you can get to a decent English hexameter is probably Raeburn's recent translation of Metamorphoses. dactylic hexameter is an alien, strange way to craft verse. transposing it to iambic line is nonsense, tolerated purely on the inertia of tradition, neoclassical crimes DEFUND IAMBS
when english got their hands (through germans) on accentual hexameter, they wrote stuff like "JACK and the BEAN-STALK" and generally meh the meter because they had ✨heroic couplets✨ it's insane to german/slavic ears!! classics here is in accentual dactyls!! wdym ODYSSEY as little cuties ✨IAMBS✨??
..we show how this unsupervised approach can be used to compare traditions, how different forms occupy distinct semantic spaces. multilingual topic modeling (of the formal space) shows that some forms have transnational semantics! i.e. topics are more organized by stanza than they are by languages
our new paper with @plechac.bsky.social puts thousands of poems across languages in one shared space of poetic form! we use sequence alignment on rhyme schemes to investigate 'fixed forms' and all things between: not only 'sonnets', but 'sonnet-like' things. doi.org/10.1371/jour...
