some words about the book that has been ruining, and saving, my life—FROM INFINITE WORLD: THE SOUND OF THE HAMMOND ORGAN AND THE TRAGEDY OF AIDS IN THE BLACK CHURCH. this is all imma say about it for now.

i’m going back to school at my big age 😩 studying landscape architecture at uva. hoping to learn skills that will be useful to prepare for, respond to and repair after the impacts of climate crises within already underserved and underresourced communities. imma be tired lol
this was the moment for me. i was astounded. and i literally could not believe what i was hearing and seeing. knowing that he’s a black church boy and in a community choir and gay was a lot. there was mostly silence regarding him and the others that laughed and mocked.
Finished my last visit as the Keohane Distinguished Visiting Professor at Duke/UNC Chapel Hill this week, including the performance lecture AGNOSTICOSTAL. Such a moving and exhausting experience to create while an organist, drummer and singer sang churchy things. Grateful.
i’m not doing a third season of #severance. season 2 made no sense and, ultimately, it was boringly incomprehensible. you gotta give viewers something that makes sense.
AGNOSTICOSTAL is a free public performance lecture in my 2024-25 Visiting Keohane Professorship at Duke University and UNC-Chapel Hill. Wed, April 2 at 7:30pm Hayti Heritage Center Learn more at arts.duke.edu/agnosticostal 📷: Benita Mayo”
what we see again and again is that what you allow to happen to "them"—whomever is marginalized, and the "least of these"—will undoubtedly happen to you too. we have to refuse these practices whenever they happen, to whoever they happen. anything less is acceptance.
