Effects attributed to natural phages include selective bacterial targeting and lysis, biofilm dispersal, preservation of the commensal microbiome, and downregulation of pro-inflammatory mediators (e.g., IL-6, IL-8, NF-κB, ROS), collectively supporting immune modulation and restoration of a reparative wound microenvironment. Engineered phage-based approaches are represented by phage display-derived constructs for targeted infection prevention and phage-based scaffolds supporting tissue regeneration.
