East Glacier, Mont. A wet, chilly day! Fire danger is moderate; good news since northern Idaho is at high & rivers are ceasing to run. It was 61 in Essex & jackets were required. It felt like fall. I love days like this, when crisp mountain air cools the air. Sweater required summer nights 💋

Evening is my favorite time to work in my garden. The sun no longer beats down from the east, south & west. Only a large evergreen to the west is gives much shade. The others are babies. It’s quiet, restful. Early morning is sweet, too. No insects yet. Early am & eve is loud. Bug picnic.

A grasshopper finds a landing pad on a white echinacea. I keep waiting for birds to feast on the pests, but so far that hasn’t happened. Maybe as the trees get some size, that will change.

Many moons, a few auroras & a couple shooting stars ago I loved escaping into the quiet darkroom. Developing prints away from the noise of other teens was peaceful. Their language was always a mystery. Today, the garden is my darkroom. Although it’s not quiet. Hummers, bumbles, cutter bees.

A stone path through a garden lined with Walker’s not so Low Catmint or nepeta, red, orange, pink & white echinacea, lavender, sedge, red roses, Joe Pye Weed, Haas Halo hydrangea & everbearing strawberries & ground over sedums. It’s a bit of a jungle as I tend to over plant to suppress the horsetail likely brought in from a load of soil that should have been sifted or declined. I make lots of mistakes as a gardener, but it’s good for my brain to solve problems. And I like the physical work of relocating shrubs & perennials.

A tortoiseshell brushfoot butterfly on swampy milkweed. Although monarchs are supposedly rare in northern Idaho, I’ve planted flowers & other plants for them. But other butterflies & pollinators love them.

Dragonflies & damselflies bring their own magic to the garden. Once it begins to warm, the insect party starts. Today it’s buzzing with everything from this common whitetail dragonfly, to damsels, a variety of bumblebees of different sizes, minuscule butterflies & others that remain nameless.

2/ I’m trying new varieties to attract pollinators & survive harsh weather. Endless & big leaf don’t interest the critters & are a bit fragile. Incrediball is attracting bugs. I’ve also planted two tiny haas halo - also pollinator friendly & they’re starting to get some size to them.

1/ Yep! 1. Endless Summer 2. big leaf gifted from a neighbor this spring 3. Incrediball II & invincibelle Spirit 2 rose pink & mountain lace cap. 4. Mountain lacecap. Endless is pretty; struggles with northern Idaho extremes. 3&4 love sunny south location.

Endless Summer hydrangea is thriving in its new location on the south facing wall of my house. It receives shade from the house & a Tina Sargent crabapple tree.

Big leaf hydrangea, small variety. Gifted this spring from a neighbor. I thought she was giving me an oak leaf, which I had a perfect location for. After having to remove 3 trees from our property (disease & age, & bad recommendation for a chanticleer pear tree that’s been found to be invasive & dangerous in wind storms), shade is scant, so knowing these guys can’t handle our intense summer sun, I finally found a location that it seems happy with.

The Incrediball II hydrangeas (white) and Invincibelle Spirit II love the sunny south location of my property. Located no far from the sidewalk, they are thriving in this location. Better yet, they are liked by pollinators.

This mountain lace cap hydrangea is three-years old. It came in the mail as a 6-inch plant (if it was lucky) and I didn’t think it would survive our winters. I’ve since realized it’s best to pot up smaller shrubs & nursery them in a protected location over winter. Given this plant’s resilience, I anticipate it will do well in our harsh climate.

A pollinator feeds from swampy milkweed. Although monarch butterflies are rare here, in northern Idaho, mountain butterflies & skippers really like this plant, as do smaller pollinators.

The pollinators are busy today in my gardens. Western yellow swallowtail butterfly, other small butterflies. Hummingbirds fight spiraling. Bumblebees. Honey bees. Insects I can’t ID. Tuesday magic. And so hot: 86 in northern Idaho.

Critters in my yard. Fritillary butterfly & two-spotted bumblebee. One of the perks of living im the Rockies - lots of incredible insects.

Fritillary butterfly feeding on swampy milkweed. This butterfly is common in the Rockies where I live. It’s rare to see monarch butterflies here. I planted milkweed not knowing this, however a lot of other interesting pollinators, many quite small, feed from the milkweed.

This two spotted bumblebee is drinking from a mock orange shrub. Many different bumblebee species find their way into area gardens, some as large as a human thumb and others half their size. It’s best to plant a wide variety of bulbs, perennials, shrubs and trees for pollinators.

The flowers on this Venus Dogwood began as a lime green color. The tree, which has graced my back patio garden for a year, is covered in massive white flowers for a long time. I could figure out how long, but I like to think it’s been 6 weeks.

Bumble bees are incredible. They’re superior pollinators to the honey bee. They can fly when it’s too cold for honey bees to do the same. I found this one resting on a peony flower when air was too cold even for it to fly.

This bumble bee is too cold to fly and settled into an itoh peony for the night. I discovered later in the day that it had burrowed deep into the flower for protection.

The bumble bee is barely visible, just a black spot below the water droops on the petal.

Just when I think I can’t detest any one as much as 🍊💩, Vance & Miller, Marco Rubio puts his tiny feet into the big shoes that he can’t fill. Rubio is thought by some to be the front runner for the D’s in 2028. He is a sanctimonious dip shit. He’s been working extra hard kissing up to dumpty.

Perfect weekend for yard work! I’m fortunate to own a home with a large yard. We’re preparing beds for raspberries, blueberries & elderberry bushes. My husband & I spend our money on mulch, food bearing plants & our time getting dirt under our nails. We share tools & produce with neighbors.

My garden is filling in nicely & provides a haven from the craziness. The planning is paying off as more birds, bumblebees and other fascinating pollinators let me share their spaces.

Lady bugs and a large western bumble bee, possibly, difficult to ID as they’re sometimes shy, enjoy the garden. The bumble bee is partaking of flowers on a low growing blueberry bush planted in a mountain cedar bed of perennials, grasses and shrubs.
