The perspective in Mary H.K. Choi's POOL HOUSE shifts between aimless Stevie and her actress mom Moon, as well as Moon's now-grown TV son Adam, a further complication in an already fraught mother-daughter dynamic after the death of a man they were all close to. A discomfiting, deftly-written read.

Also, justice for PLAYERS, a pretty terrific original Paramount+ production from the creators of AMERICAN VANDAL that was taken off the streamer after all of 8 months.

I remember watching an episode of the show NO ACTIVITY, which had an impressive cast. It was a cops/criminals show, except only scenes in enclosed spaces where nothing's going on. I just looked it up and it's no longer on its streamer, yet ran for FOUR seasons, and the final season is animated?!

I've seen THE FURIOUS twice in full theatres and it's an absolute blast with a crowd. A relentlessly, creatively violent martial arts movie for the ages starring a pan-Asian cast of fighter-actors bringing their own styles to the party. The dialogue...well, we're not here to watch these guys TALK.

I received some very unexpected gifts from the inimitable @toughsugarcookie.bsky.social, incl. this china from the Titanic episode of NEWSRADIO, a show that means a lot to us both, she as a longtime crew member, me as a kid who watched it on a mini TV hidden under my desk dreaming of working in TV.

I was really quite impressed by EXIT 8, an adaptation of a video game cheekily billed as a "walking simulator" that embraces the point-and-click repetitiveness of traversing the same stretch of hallway over and over again and manages to build tension and an unsettling tone over a feature's length.

. @faitherinhicks.bsky.social's charming, moving middle-grade graphic novel THE INBETWEENS is about teen twin sisters attending an animation summer camp, finding joy in art while learning more difficult lessons about authority figures that disappoint & life's paths not always being what you expect.

UNIVERSALITY by Natasha Brown was an impulse borrow... Apparently, I am not immune to the allure of gold. It opens with a longread about a gold-bar-involved crime that pushes societal hot buttons, then jumps into the perspectives of figures involved, a satire on the crafting of public narratives.

Apparently my idea of a comfort watch is Bob Hoskins yelling, and worse, at people.
