Out of all Fire Emblem protagonists, Ike and his journey stand out for how he frames the setting he inhabits. Tellius is a world ravaged by class and race divides, and Ike stands out as an "outsider". Raised amidst a bunch of misfits, he's blunt, practical and always ready to stand up for others.

Insane out of context, but to me, Wigglytuff is the heart of the Explorers games. Though he seems goofy and mercurial at first, everything he does is to inspire you to find joy in the wonders of life and to be kind to others, no matter what. The Guildmaster's always got your back.

On the topic of Final Fantasy, this bastard made me sob. He starts off as Exdeath's minion, but he finds meaning and purpose in his clashes (and eventual friendship) with you. Even as he fails over and over again and is abandoned by everything he once knew ... He keeps going just to see you again.

I have a huge weakness for "learning to love yourself through the other" narratives, so Ardbert was the emotional core of Shadowbringers for me. He and the WoL really were there for each other, even in the most dire circumstances. And he's such a sweetie! Love his performance by Junichi Suwabe, too.

There are near 200 characters in Touhou, but I think our main protagonist is still my favorite all around. You get to see her so much, it's hard not to grow attached to her and her blasé attitude and clever one-liners, very much subverting the usual image of a "shrine maiden."

Recent example, but I think about Phainon all the time still. There's so much subtext to him that it's kind of overwhelming, in a good way. It's rare to see male leads deal with the trauma of being a survivor in such a visceral way, and eventually persevere in spite of and along WITH his scars.

The Xenoblade series has a ton of great characters, but Nia is a masterclass among them. Aloof at first glance, she's a driven and energetic girl forced to grow up all too soon, struggling to trust in others, nevermind in herself. Her (literal!) transformation as a character is incredible to see.
