Gave a speech at the union rally Wednesday and because I’m me I wrote it down on paper

I moved to New York 10 years ago to start my new job at The New York TImes. Three months after that, I was diagnosed with Stage II breast cancer. I was 28. Unlucky diagnosis, but incredibly lucky timing.

Because I worked here, at this family-owned newspaper, I had access to excellent, affordable health care. I had a mentor and friend in the late Janet Elder, who welcomed me to The Times and gave me advice, all while navigating her own diagnosis. New York City has the best hospitals in the world — having access to that level of care is invaluable. Our affordable health care plan here at The Times meant that when I received the worst news of my life I only had one crisis to deal with: My health, and not my finances, could be my main focus.

Since that diagnosis in July of 2016, I have had two surgeries, chemotherapy, radiation, and more MRIs than I care to count. If my luck holds, next year will mark the end of 10 years of hormone therapy. I have seen the same care team for my entire treatment. I deserve to keep seeing the same specialists who know my medical history and also know me.

The company's current proposal would leave our health care fund with a deficit of $8 million. The company's representatives use buzz words like "modernize" to describe the changes they say we need to make. They have said that putting money into our health care plan is like "shoveling money into a furnace."

The New York Times spent $56 million in buybacks to shareholders in the first three months of this year. The company made $118 Million in operating profit last year. It is a profitable news business because of all of us. We, the members of this union, do not need to change what we are asking for. It's the company that needs to take a hard look at its priorities.

Early in my career in journalism, I was given one very valuable piece of advice: Don't go into debt to take a job. With the rising costs of health care, the company's current proposals are a pay cut for me and many of my colleagues. Why would we accept that from a company swimming in cash?

We deserve good health care that does not drive anyone into debt. We deserve recognition of our contributions to the success of The New York Times. The place where I started 10 years ago was one that cared about its employees. It's time for that company to show up at the table.

If you know me, you know I am not shy about speaking up. I have written letters about my experience with cancer during the last two contract negotiations. Last time, Cliff Levy took the time to respond to me and wish me good health. This time, after I painstakingly detailed my personal trauma to company leaders, begging them to see the importance of a solvent health care fund, I heard nothing. I guess we really are doing things differently this time.
