On my walk to my medical appointment earlier this week in Vancouver, I came across a trio of palm trees. Except the middle one seemed a little different.

I cannot get over how noticeably unbalanced this is. A giant display as part of the Canada Celebrates FIFA event, and it looks… off. I often feel an imposter as a graphic designer because of all the time I spent in tech not doing design, but, things like this make me feel a little more confident.

Huh. So, the city that has been complaining about the unhoused population, drug crises, and other "undesireables" is rolling out hammocks for folks to rest in… I'm sure that's going to go over well.

The world's biggest [soccer ball/football emoji] competition is here. And so are Vancouver's newest recovery stations.

Custom goal net hammocks are being set up around the city, giving you a place to recover between matches, mountain views, an everything else on your World Cup Itinerary.

Once the tournament wraps up, we're taking the actual match-played nets from the pitch and transforming them into hammocks too, so you can kick back in a piece of football history.

The hammock locations will be announced soon, but unfortunately, none of them are on top of BC Place. See Less.

Also, since Altman and the like have forgotten, the works they have stolen aren’t weighted. So, in amongst our best work is also our worst work as humans, and genAI is just regurgitating whatever seems most probable, not necessarily the best.

Let me trace the timeline here because nobody's connecting it.

Step 1: Scrape the entire internet. Every book, every article, every conversation, every piece of art, every forum post. Do it without asking.
Do it without paying.

Step 2: Train a model on all of it. Call it "artificial intelligence."

Step 3: Go to BlackRock's Infrastructure Summit and announce: "We see a future where intelligence is a utility, like electricity or water, and people buy it from us on a meter."

Step 3 is where you sell people's own knowledge back to them. On a meter.

They took the collective output of human thought, compressed it into a model, and now they want to charge you by the token to access a version of what you and everyone you know already created.

One Reddit user put it perfectly: "They stole all this data from us, the people, our life's work, creativity, art, by devouring the internet and blowing through all copyright laws. Now they want to sell it back to us in the form of a utility."

Imagine if someone photocopied every book in the public library, burned the library down, and then opened a subscription service for the copies.
That's the metered intelligence business model.
And they're pitching it to infrastructure investors as though they invented water.

Well doesn’t this sum up my dilemma regarding the other surgery I need to make a decision about in the next 6 months. The risk factors for it are still 1-2%, but the severity of the outcome is Severe, so everything still seems like a much bigger risk than before. Unless the nerve recovers.

Let’s build AI data centres where we are already seeing drought conditions, in the middle of climate crisis which is about to be exacerbated by potentially the strongest ever El Niño! /s @telussupport.bsky.social doesn’t need AI data centres, no one does, because genAI is a bubble about to pop.

Aww, so sad to hear of the passing of John Garrett. I absolutely loved listening to him during Canucks games, and felt that he and John Shorthouse were an unbeatable pairing.

I tell you, I did a full stop walking down the frozen aisle in Costco today. I had grabbed frozen fruit and was minding my own business when I came past this. It stood out because I literally thought it was KFC next to creamsicles and ice cream.

This is bittersweet, winning the provincial slot for BC. This town is going through a lot, our grief has been on display globally, and now this. More public spotlight, more performance. I sincerely hope the benefits outweigh everything in the end.
