Extremely tempting to make the flag of one of the countries in my WIP an American flag with yellow stars and when people are like "why did you rip off the american flag this place is nothing like america" telling them "what the fuck are you talking about I ripped off the Malaysian flag"

That's correct, a renter cannot modify the structural elements of their home. You would be better off with something that can be surface-mounted on the doorframe, such as a simple gunpowder mantrap
