"Jessick, you handled the Rattlesnake Queen well."
I sighed.
"I handled it like a cop. That's what I am."
He took a step closer, and I took a step back. The distance between us felt measured and deliberate, as if we were both counting the spaces.
"How's the shoulder?" he asked.
"Fine. Healed." I lied.
"Good. That's good."
We stood there in the echoing silence, two men who had once known each other’s demons, now talking like polite strangers. It was precisely what I'd wanted, what I'd worked for this past year.

Bel-Air didn’t flaunt money. It sealed it behind gates and trimmed it into hedges so clean you could use the
shrubbery as sight lines. Up here,
opulence wasn’t loud. It was curated and sculpted into Italianate facades, shadowed porticos, and driveways that curled like whispers through the hills.

I guided the unmarked sedan past a sandstone guard post that didn’t even glance at us—badge privilege—and the road pulled us higher, deeper. The light changed as we climbed, growing warmer, softer, and filtered through wealth.

I wrote the first one—The Ordinary World. My story is the only SF story, but written as a comic farce. It is the 1st and 3rd chapters of my WIP—Geeks in Space, detailing the adventures of Jron and his friends.
