A Cooper's hawk looks past the camera and into the distance as it perches in a tree. In this close-up shot, we can only see its chest and head. Its chest feathers are a muddy white color with teardrop-shaped streaks of brown. Its right shoulder is barely visible and is dark brown with light brown highlights on the edges of the feathers. Its head is mixed light and dark brown. Its eyes are large, circular, and yellow with big black pupils. Its beak, which is black but connected to its face with a band of yellow, is short, curved, and very sharp.

Against a perfect #BlueSky one warm summer morning in 2024, this pelagic cormorant gave me a nice photo opportunity as it landed on a rock in front of me #birds #bird #photography #ornithology #birdphotos #nature #naturephotography #birdphotography #wildlife #wildlifephotography #birdoftheday 🦉 🪶

With a pure blue sky background, a pelagic cormorant spreads every single one of its feathers on its wings, including its tail feathers, as it slows down to land on a rock. The view of this cormorant is from underneath and in front of it, so we are looking at its chest, head, and the underside of its wings. Its entire body is all black, including its feet, which are spread around its tail. Its neck and head shimmer slightly with a dull iridescent green. A ring of orange flesh separates the feathers on its head from its eyes, face, and beak.

Bright morning sunlight shines directly, as well as indirectly as it reflects off the water below, onto a belted kingfisher as it hovers in the air with its wings spread up and open. Its head is dark blue. It has a band of white around its neck, and then a band of dark blue below that. The rest of the underside of its body is white with rusty orange spread around. The undersides of its wings are white, except for the ends of the feathers, which are dark blue. Some orange creeps from its body to the inside of its wings. The undersides of its tailfeathers are dark gray with white stripes.

A violet-green swallow flies quickly over running river water. This little bird gets its name, unsurprisingly, from its neon green iridescent feathers on its back, wings, and head. At the right angle, these feathers also reflect violet/purple and blue. The bird's underside is all white. This swallow is flying low over out-of-focus water, and its wings are raised up as it flaps them.

Two gulls are caught in the heat of the moment. At the top of a black, bumpy rock, these two gulls appear to be in the middle of the mating process, though it comes across as more of a fight. One gull is on top, digging its claws into the neck of the one below as it grabs hold and spreads its wings out in an attempt to balance. The one below appears very unhappy and has its beak open as it looks up at the gull on top of it, as if it's going to bite it at any moment.

In front of brown seaweed-covered rocks, a pigeon guillemot raises its wings high as it runs along the surface of the ocean during takeoff. The gorgeous green head of a mallard duck is the focus of this photo. Olive green, rippling water surrounds the bird. It has a long, yellow, and semi-flat beak made for grabbing underwater vegetation. Its entire head, all the way to the bottom of its neck, is iridescent neon green. A thin band of white separates the green from a reddish-brown color that covers its upper chest, which fades to light brown on its back.

A pileated woodpecker clings to the side of a tree in bright daylight. These woodpeckers are huge, larger than most as far as I know. From their tail feathers to the tip of their beaks, when their neck isn't withdrawn, they must measure about a foot or more in length. They have a black body, black and white striped neck and face, and large, long beaks. They also have vibrant red feathers that stick up off the top of their head. This one is looking up along the tree with soft blurry green behind it from distant trees.
