lapsed indie label & publisher, pharmacist in the dtes, dad, he/him, vegetarian: music, beer, beagles, harm reduction, autism, lover of condiments, sometimes delinquent reader and inordinately fond of ellipses...may block anyone bitching about paywalls.
A few photos from Powell River on the unceded traditional territory of the Tla’amin Nation.
Sadly fell sick to start my vacation so missed the Alabama Shakes show last night but caught Kim Gordon tonight…fun show if mostly vibes and adoration.
My beagle used to hate fireworks and thunder (the later thankfully rare here). NYE and halloween were awful until another dog owner suggested a trip to the vet for xanax and it made those days so much more bearable for him.
So @justinbstein.bsky.social said we should see the psycodelics and we did. Rather fab funk show at the fox cabaret…will be seeing them every time they roll through town.
Last night at the indie pop show…Heavenly joined by Rose Melberg performing “C is the Heavenly option”
There’s a reason i always vacation around solstice…sunset at 9:35 from the ferry deck
When you get to the ferry holding pen early and its a gorgeous summer day and you’re eager to get to the novel you’re enjoying and…you realize you left it on the bedside table 😭😭😭😭 (Have two other books but that feels like cheating) ((The book in question: Water Moon by Samantha Sotto Yambao))
When you go to the local park to read and there’s a drum circle 😭 #eastvanlife #itsnoteasy
Giving my beagle xanax was one of the greatests kindnesses i unfortunately learned about later than i should have . Halloween, NYE, etc were much easier on him despite the sky exploding. (Bonus beagle content just cause:
Tigers Jaw “I Saw Water” last nite at the Rickshaw here in Vancouver made me very happy. As did Plane Vs. Tank Vs. Submarine, a song i obsessed over last year. Overall just a really fun show…
Second night of Belle and Sebastian, this time joined by another old friend who has been listening to them with me since i brought an advance copy of Boy With the Arab Strap back from a trip…
And tonight… Belle and Sebastain Tigermilk anniversary show with Krissy and Karen, friends i’ve seen the band with several times before. As we now live on opposite ends of the country, we met in Toronto for the bands only two Canadian concerts:
Belatedly cleaning up the pile of completed books on the bedside table… Several enjoyable ones but Human Acts by Han Kang might be the best book i’ve read in a while, gorgeous and inventive writing/translation despite the horrific subject matter. #booksky
7 AM flight tomorrow for Toronto hangs and concerts (Arms Length, Belle and Sebastain x2) so of course that meant hangs with K to see everyone’s second favourite Pedro tonight. (Luckily i packed yesterday…) #indie #pedrothelion #we’llsleepwhenwe’redead
Starting the weekend early and ferrying through the southern gulf islands on the way to pender…
And this was actually the song i wanted to post but alas…just a truly joyful show. #joycemanor #indie #punk
Snail Mail w Sharp Pins last night. Have always loved “Thinning” and fun to watch Lindsey grow as a performer since her first show at the Biltmore when she was only 16 or 17. Sharp Pins were also better than their last local show (Green Auto) although it still didn’t move me much. #indiemusic
May is going to be ridiculous for shows (Snailmail/Sharp Pins, Joyce Manor, Lucy Dacus, Pedro the Lion, Arms Length, Belle and Sebastian x 2) but weather has finally allowed for park and patio reads so digging into the debut An Yu novel after loving “Ghost Music” #booksky
Finally… Somehow never got into the Wedding Present but Mark Robinson was opening and Perfect Teeth and Air Miami were formative records. Mark was a frustrating set, doing medley after medley and playing 51 song snippets in 45 minutes but fuck if the Wedding Present didn’t put on a clinic #indie
And then… Off to the cobalt for the indie pop/indie stylings of twen…a set that started ok and then midway started hitting all the fun notes including this great Crowded House cover
Next was the Messthetics with James Brandon Lewis at the Wise Hall, a favourite smaller venue 3 nights later doing their punk jazz hybrid. Saw them on their last tour and while it was good, it was also close to the album. This show hit harder… #indie #punk #jazz #experimental
It was a rather busy month show wise so just resurfacing to post about a few of the musical highlights… Like flyte doing an a cappella cover of one of my favourite songs, Alvvays “Marry Me Archie”
