She made an inaccurate statement about the US stance in regards to Taiwan and China at an international conference. One that does not reflect US historical policy. And JD Vance pounced on it.
I honestly think they will do it again, because it will free up future obligations (fewer noncompetitive renewals). That leaves a large block of money next year for block grants to red states with lower NIH awards per person. Bhattacharya really wants to spread funding out to red states.
Oregon does not even make the top ten states for lowest diversity of race (although the contrast to CA and WA is real). Thanks for the historical context.

I think the number of awards was down 24%, not 34%, my error. The specific bill text indicates the same practice this year can be done. So, still 24% fewer awards (than FY24) in FY26.

Basically, he synthesized multiple studies on tissue damage to conclude that anything in the shaded region causes damage to the tissue. Thus, the "Shannon limit". Incidentally, Bob is a great guy, and a great lecturer, if you ever get the chance. I saw him at UCSF multiple times. 2/
