There are at least 12 reasons people play video games, but I'd agree that Story is one of the most important ones.
I built this indoor swing for my toddler (some woodworking, a tiny bit of 3d printing, lots of sewing) and I'm excited to give it to her tomorrow. Worked on it over the course of 2.5 days or so.

Rob Zubek's 'Elements of Game Design' and 'A Game Design Vocabulary' from Anthropy and Clark are the best for beginners. I can recommend a bunch more if you're further along. Also, there's MY book *waggles eyebrows seductively*

I agree with a lot of other ppl's picks, but I have to add this top-to-bottom classic.
