Global health security is strongest when countries work together. Retreating from that principle risks reversing decades of progress and leaves us all more vulnerable to the next emerging threat. I'm grateful to PLOS GPH for the opportunity to contribute to this important discussion.
Excited to share our latest publication in AIDS! We performed one of the largest multi-ancestry genome-wide association studies of cardiovascular disease in people living with HIV using the Million Veteran Program. We identified a novel genetic locus near NAT8 associated with CVD risk.
What a pleasant surprise to receive this year's faculty mentorship award from the infectious disease fellows graduating class. My mantra always is paying it forward. I was once a med student, a resident, a fellow. I wouldn't be here without mentors. It's a privilege to be that for others.
I don't know how real this rumor is. Hope it's real, would be amazing to see Serena compete again. Maybe blaze a new trail and create new records 😊.
Kenyan healthcare workers are pushing back hard against reported plans for the U.S. to establish Ebola quarantine/treatment facilities in Kenya for exposed American personnel during the ongoing Bundibugyo Ebola outbreak in Central/East Africa.
Excellent Ebola Outbreak dashboard by the Ministry of Health in the DRC. You can view via link. sante.gouv.cd/epidemie/ebo...
This was Paul Farmer's last book before his untimely death. It paints the picture of how neglect, violence, and greed set the stage for the most devastating #Ebola outbreak in history. It deeply moved me and made more committed to making justice central to my work. Now is a great time to read it.
Some weekend reading New NEJM trial: oral ensitrelvir significantly reduced symptomatic #COVID19 among household contacts when started within 72 hours of symptom onset in the index case. Infection rates were 2.9% vs 9.0% with placebo (RR 0.33, 95% CI 0.22–0.49). www.nejm.org/doi/full/10....
Tomorrow at 5pm US EST I'll be doing a live Webinar for @medpagetoday.com moderated by @jeremyfaust.bsky.social on #hantavirus You can register using the link below if you are interested. ehgroup.zoom.us/webinar/regi...
I am very excited to dive into John Green's " Everything is Tuberculosis".
Best to follow the updates from trusted sources like #ECDC and #WHO in what is a rapidly evolving situation. #HantaVirus #Outbreaks
Sadly there's a heavy price to pay for public health advocacy. Wrote about the withholding of vital funds to GAVI needed to ensure vaccines for poorer countries. Found out the piece had run today by receiving hate mail.
Every time someone deploys the “DEI hire” trope to belittle a highly qualified person outside the White cisgender heterosexual male norm, send them this picture.
Advancement in global health academia is mediated by power networks, and allyship only matters when it changes who gets access to that power.
Today I spent the day at the Yale School of public health @yalesph.bsky.social as a visiting Prof and guest speaker in the department of epidemiology and microbial diseases. The best part of my day was meeting with graduate students.
Flu spreads efficiently especially in close quarters like military troop lodging facilities. If you are in the military you are required to get several vaccines because of how devastating outbreaks can be to troops and also because they are more likely be targeted by agents of biological warfare.
The Pope had the gorgeous and unique "toghu" design embroidered on the robe he wore for his mass in Bamenda. Ot is the traditional dress pattern of the NW region of #Cameroon.
Would credit the original creator of I knew who they were. Much needed humor in these times 😁😂
Very sad yet completely unsurprising to see data censorship of a study showing the positive benefits of the COVID vaccines in preventing hospitalizations. This is anti-science in action and also harmful to public health. I expect better from the NIH/ acting CDC director but alas.
I think we have undeniable proof that NOTHING can stand in the way of a Black person intent on staying moisturized. 😊 Captain Victor Glover pilot of Artemis II moisturizing in MFKG space made my day y'all. I need to up my dedication to my skin care routine. #Goals
What a stunning and gorgeous picture of Earth taken from Artemis II courtesy of NASA. I wish us humans cared more about our beautiful planet to take better care of her. What have you done today to make the world a better place?
Best present ever, spending my birthday for the first time in over a decade with my parents. A happy coincidence and a blessing. Grateful for another year around the sun and excited about what lies ahead and how I can continue to do my part in making the world a better place. #Grateful
"Breast ironing is gender-based violence. It is an act performed on girls’ bodies without their consent, causing lasting physical harm, because those girls’ bodies were considered dangerous. Because their developing breasts were read as invitations to assault" bktitanji.substack.com/p/the-girls-...
It never gets old seeing the mountain when she decides to show her face and not hide behind the clouds. You take her effortless beauty for granted when you live here, but it strikes me anew whenever I visit. The Stormy skies overhead - perfection. Mt Cameroon, Buea, South West Region.
