Recently, I participated in a Magical Girl collab through @collabcarnival.bsky.social and hosted by Feather! You can find the full collab here: collabcarnival.weebly.com/magical-outf... Look at all those great outfits! I had SO MUCH FUN putting Teagan in an outfit - and a Sailor Moon reference 😂

But in the village, Ada, the village elder, speaks fondly to Colum about his mother. Colum gives Ada the grace to speak openly about her - and we learn that Ada understands she cannot see Ophelia any longer, as it makes Ophelia feel worse. But she admits that those in love often suffer together.

So why is she so cold? There are some hints scattered in dialogue. In Burrafirth, we learn that King Alistair was greatly admired because he produced an heir not even a year after his marriage to Ophelia.

The next time we 'see' Colum's mother, Queen Ophelia, it is in a flashback where she coldly seems to wish death upon her own son - the only heir of King Alistair - the duty required of her to this kingdom. Mother Fiona says she's going to tell Alistair that Ophelia was there; he won't be happy.

Teagan is baffled that people are forced to do this and I think in the scope of the story, it's an easy sentiment to wave off since Colum is so determined. Colum reaffirms to Teagan that he hates the duty required of him - but admits he has seen what duty does to those who love differently...

Nerding out for a moment here - As 'The Poisoner's Piece' expands, Colum's main problem is explored: he does not wish to have an heir. Monarchs have loveless marriages and create blood heirs, as it creates a peaceful transition of power for the kingdom, but Colum is breaking the pattern.
