Forgetfulness

The name of the author is the first to go
followed obediently by the title, the plot,
the heartbreaking conclusion, the entire novel
which suddenly becomes one you have never read, never even heard of,

as if, one by one, the memories you used to harbor
decided to retire to the southern hemisphere of the brain,
to a little fishing village where there are no phones.

Long ago you kissed the names of the nine muses goodbye
and watched the quadratic equation pack its bag,
and even now as you memorize the order of the planets,

something else is slipping away, a state flower perhaps,
the address of an uncle, the capital of Paraguay.

Whatever it is you are struggling to remember,
it is not poised on the tip of your tongue
or even lurking in some obscure corner of your spleen.

It has floated away down a dark mythological river
whose name begins with an L as far as you can recall

well on your own way to oblivion where you will join those
who have even forgotten how to swim and how to ride a bicycle.

No wonder you rise in the middle of the night
to look up the date of a famous battle in a book on war.
No wonder the moon in the window seems to have drifted
out of a love poem that you used to know by heart.

I got a new fancy CD player for Chrimbo and to take it out on its inaugural spin I slapped in a mix CD I made maybe 20 years ago. I had forgotten Guano Apes existed. Will likely do so again. The 80s high hair portraits!

A room filled with the tackiest shit imaginable. Imagine someone with absolutely negative taste and an unlimited budget. There's a sofa and a couple of guest chairs opposite a daybed in front of an art piece depicting an archer. Several lamps (another photo had six and this reveals two more) with gold colored lampshades that much exude a hue akin to glowing piss. A mismatched cabinet and footrest(?). The walls are papered in a busy blue and white pattern and the ceiling is a vertigo-inducing pattern of blue and white lines and angles. MOST IMPORTANTLY however, there are three enlarged mall studio portraits of some young woman (women) from the late 80s with HUGE hair. Just absolutely the tallest hair!

The whole thing is like one of those hidden image pictures, except instead of a sailboat you'll eventually see the worst decorating decisions ever made.

This is clearly threatening because of Rankin-Bass's The Hobbit.

This picture gets worse the longer you look at it. Is that a Labubu on a necklace? Why is the stuffed toy in his hand also wearing a Labubu around its neck? Why does he have a watch on each wrist? If he's rich why does he buy shirts from Temu? Is that person with him above the age of consent?
