Leader! Leader! Leader!

To me, an Avatar story has to have badass moments and cool bending action but it also has to have moments of goofy humor. I especially loved the jokes in the show when the Fire Nation soldiers were just dopes sometimes.

Mira and Suki butt heads quite a bit. Mira instincts are to punch first… and to keep punching. Suki is more thoughtful and patient. This won’t be the last time these two will clash

Of COURSE Suki is going to sacrifice her own ostrich-horse to save another soldier

Unfortunately I couldn’t get a proper 2 page spread in due to where the page count landed (that’s just the way it goes with comics sometimes!) I wanted to really showcase how brutal the hand to hand combat was in these battles.

There was some debate on what to call actual Fire Nation knives because “fire daggers” is a bending move. “Tanto” was a place holder but we ultimately decided that folks would be able to distinguish between the knife and the bending. Besides “dagger” is just such a fun word!

I like finding ways to remind folks that none of the Avatars were perfect and they all had their own Achilles heel. @bellbessa.bsky.social’s illustrations here are stunning. I love how Suki’s eyes in the last panel have a shimmering glaze to them — on the verge of crying. She knows what’s coming.

I love Andal’s Earth Kingdom idioms!

Andal doesn’t want the Warriors or any of her soldiers hearing details about what awaits them. Bad for morale. The warriors are starting to fracture. Suki has to keep them moving.

I wanted to remjnd who our warriors are. Rie is very empathetic. Fume is our brainy science gal Mira is our fighter Aika only speaks when she needs to Also Suki is stepping into her leader role even though she’s not aware she’s even doing it. She’s a natural.
