This is what automakers took from us. It’s a map from 1925 (higher res: www.detroithistorical.org/learn/online...), showing the mass transit options in SE Michigan. There were options to go from Detroit to Ann Arbor, Flint, Pontiac, or Monroe (or any city in between). Would be transformative today.
