The walls of this bar in Kyoto are decorated with bills from customers’ countries. We didn’t have any Canadian currency, but we wanted to leave something as a symbol of our nation.
#lastfourwatched #letterboxdfriday #letterboxd #filmsky I’m visiting Japan for the first time (next week!), and in the lead up we’ve been watching nothing but Japanese cinema. Three of these four were new to me; all of them are excellent. Sanjuro is perhaps the only one that isn’t extremely dour.
Just watched A LEGEND OR WAS IT? (1963) on the Criterion Channel. Chose it for the actors and the 83-minute run time. Packs a wallop: an effective thriller, an unsettling critique of the cowardice that fuels fascism, and a gorgeous work of cinematography. Bit of a downer, though! #filmsky
After House (1977), Obayashi had plans for Godzilla, and they’re as nutty as you’d hope.
Surely someone has noted that the signature Weapons (2025) stance is cribbed from Frank Dicksee’s “La belle dame sans merci” (c. 1901)?

On the one hand, the acting is appalling, the soundtrack is miserable, and the dialogue is inaudible a quarter of the time. On the other hand, Eric Bogosian’s murder face is hilarious. #filmsky
