Key points
Globally, females are disproportionately affected by iron deficiency, owing to biological, socioeconomic, and health system factors.

Both nonanemic iron deficiency and iron-deficiency anemia cause substantial morbidity.

Complete blood count and ferritin level are important initial investigations in those with history and examination findings suggestive of iron deficiency states; note that the lower limit of normal ferritin values has recently been raised, increasing identification of those who would benefit from treatment.

Treatment is indicated when ferritin is below 50 μg/L in a pregnant person, below 30 μg/L in other adults, and below 20 μg/L in children.

Oral iron and menstrual loss reduction are first-line treatments in females with heavy menstrual bleeding; intravenous iron is useful in malabsorption states, to avoid blood transfusion, and when oral iron cannot be tolerated.

Impacts on hockey company, dairy farmers
The president of Force Hockey, Hugo Lacasse, says the news of a fresh round of tariffs didn't quite surprise him, but finding hockey equipment on the list of targeted products did.

Lacasse says tariffs have already been difficult to navigate over the last year. Sometimes he wouldn't know a product was tariffed until it reached the customer's door.

"It's very complicated to ship to the USA, and there's some unpredictable tariffs that come out of nowhere," he said, saying import sheets don't always specify exactly why a product was tariffed.

These "invisible tariffs," as Lacasse calls them, forced him to shift away from the U.S. market around six months ago. Now, Force Hockey's business in the U.S. makes up less than 10 per cent — and is mostly concentrated in Democratic states — compared to around 30 per cent before the trade war.

Recently, Force Hockey's customer base has expanded to include Europeans, which has helped to compensate for the reduction in U.S. sales.

So, Monday's news will have little impact on Lacasse's bottom line, he says.

"In the future, we will have to take a decision if we stop directly [shipping] to USA," he said.

A turning point in negotiations: economist
In an interview with CP24 Tuesday morning, Carleton University business Prof. Ian Lee said he believes this latest salvo in Trump’s trade war represents a turning point for Canadian negotiations.

“He’s really putting a squeeze on us,” Lee said, suggesting that previous efforts to “somehow defeat” the largest economy on earth should be replaced by concessions.

“We have to decide what do we want to give up to get a deal.”

Lee said that Canada’s supply management in the dairy and egg sector may be the best place to start, given Trump’s previous criticisms of the industry.

“That should be at the top of the list that we are willing to throw under the bus because the Americans hate supply management. So that’s we’ve got to compromise and give up some things to get what we want from Trump,” he said.

Prime Minister Mark Carney’s government has been adamant that Canada’s supply management will not be on the negotiating table.

Dauphin & Area RCMP

On July 7, RCMP executed two search warrants at a residence in Dauphin as part of a months-long investigation into firearms trafficking.
The investigation’s origins date back to late March, when RCMP were notified that firearms charges had been laid in the United States against a 73-year-old Dauphin-area male. This prompted an RCMP investigation that resulted in further charges being laid against that individual.
While executing a search warrant in that case, RCMP found and seized firearms that were purchased by a second suspect and never lawfully transferred. After further investigation, two warrants to search the second suspect’s home were obtained by the National Weapons Enforcement Support Team (NWEST).
The warrants were executed last week by NWEST and the Manitoba West District General Investigation Section, with support from several RCMP units – including the Manitoba West District Crime Reduction Enforcement Support Team (CREST), Manitoba Provincial Serious and Organized Crime, the Emergency Response Team, Dauphin RCMP and Police Dog Services.
In total, 439 firearms were seized from the property, as was an antique cannon, ammunition and more than $300,000 in cash.

It is expected to take several more weeks for investigators to document the large collection of evidence gathered at the residence and determine how many of the firearms were illegally possessed. So far, at least three firearms are believed to have been illegally trafficked and one firearm had its serial number tampered with.
“The illegal trafficking of prohibited weapons is a serious offence that threatens public safety,” said RCMP Assistant Commissioner and Manitoba Commanding Officer Scott McMurchy. “We thank the many RCMP officers who are working on this case for their tireless efforts in targeting individuals who are trafficking these dangerous and illegal weapons and bringing them to justice.”
Inky Mark, 78, of Dauphin is charged with:
• Firearm trafficking;
• Possession of a firearm with a tampered serial number;
• Possession of property obtained by crime over $5,000;
• Careless use of a firearm x2;
• Possession of a firearm when knowing possession is unauthorized;
• Possession of a prohibited device when knowing possession is unauthorized x2;
• Possession of a restricted/prohibited weapon with ammo without a licence; and
• Unsafe storage of firearms x3.
Mark was remanded into custody. He was subsequently released on a release order.

I'm not one to quote former senator Don Plett, but it is noteworthy that he feels these two PMJT appointees are better Senate representatives for MB than this person who is not locally known, or meaningfully connected to MB issues.

But Plett questioned the move.

He pointed to two women, appointed by former prime minister Justin Trudeau, as examples of strong Manitoba representation in the Senate. They are social justice advocate Mary Jane McCallum, who has Cree heritage and was Brandon University’s first Indigenous chancellor; and health care advocate Dr. Gigi Osler, who was the first female surgeon and the first racialized woman who was elected president of the Canadian Medical Association. Her parents immigrated from the Philippines.

“I would put them somewhat in the same category as I put myself,” said Plett, who is from rural Manitoba and has a background in agricultural business. “We were representing a unique community, and I think that needs to be sought out,” he said.

In 1954, [typo in original, should be 1854] under the authorization of Sidney Herbert, the Secretary of War, Florence Nightingale brought a team of 38 volunteer nurses to care for the British soldiers fighting in the Crimean War, which was intended to limit Russian expansion into Europe. Nightingale and her nurses arrived at the military hospital in Scutari and found soldiers wounded and dying amid horrifying sanitary conditions. Ten times more soldiers were dying of diseases such as typhus, typhoid, cholera, and dysentery than from battle wounds.

The soldiers were poorly cared for, medicines and other essentials were in short supply, hygiene was neglected, and infections were rampant. Nightingale found there was no clean linen; the clothes of the soldiers were swarming with bugs, lice, and fleas; the floors, walls, and ceilings were filthy; and rats were hiding under the beds.1 There were no towels, basins, or soap, and only 14 baths for approximately 2000 soldiers. The death count was the highest of all hospitals in the region. One of Nightingale's first purchases was of 200 Turkish towels; she later provided an enormous supply of clean shirts, plenty of soap, and such necessities as plates, knives, and forks, cups and glasses. Nightingale believed the main problems were diet, dirt, and drains—she brought food from England, cleaned up the kitchens, and set her nurses to cleaning up the hospital wards. A Sanitary Commission, sent by the British government, arrived to flush out the sewers and improve ventilation.

Nightingale's accomplishments during the disastrous years the British army experienced in the Crimea were largely the result of her concern with sanitation and its relation to mortality,
