🌱🌹🦉My south central Montana garden and a few visitors in this second week of August.

A female ruby-throated hummingbird heading south stops by for some nectar from lavender bee balm in my Montana garden.

A beautiful (damask?) rose with pink rimmed petals of cream and yellow is in full bloom collecting sunshine.

A common garter snake hides among the slender leaves of a day lily.

🌱🌹🐞🐝 First Viceroy butterfly in my garden this year. Seen lots of Swallowtails and many moths, but this is first Viceroy.

A butterfly with orange wings with black veins and white dots on the fringes sits on a light purple cluster of oregano blooms.

#watercolor sketches of my hike into the Little Belt Mtns in Central Montana a few weeks ago.

A couple of rusty hoppers from an abandoned mine operation. A brick base holds up two large bins. A trail on the right leads to the bins, and one in the center slopes down below. Several large pines and dense undergrowth surround. Limestone cliffs colored by iron deposits in the background. Little Belt Creek seen in the distance.

A large cumulonimbus cloud is hovering ominously over the Little Belt Mtns. Several dead deciduous trees and a few tall pine trees in the foreground.

A large yellow grasshopper gives me some side eye from his stalk of veronica.

🌱🌲🌿🌞 Last night, an approaching rain shower and the sunset collided in spectacular fashion, setting the heavens ablaze. #Montana

A half dead cottonwood fronts a sky full of approaching rain clouds which are lit up light a rainbow by the sunset. Golden yellow at the horizon, then red orange, then violet, and finally indigo.

Back on my #watercolors. Today’s sketch is from my visit a few weeks ago to the Sluice Boxes (river rapids in the Little Belt Mtns in Montana).

🌱A couple waves of hail have destroyed some of my garden today. Lilies blown apart, hosta shredded, rhubarb leaves in tatters. I was able to cover pots, and my trees shielded much, but it’s always a bit sad. #Montana

Laurel #Montana got hammered this afternoon with 2 waves of hail and an hour of heavy rain. Looks wintry out there.

🌱Morning walk through the garden. Still June cool for #Montana

🌱Nearly hot day today after cool weeks. Garden beginning to really pop. #Montana Fellow gardeners, what you got in your patch of ground?

Bright yellow daylily blossoms trumpet in many directions beneath a large cottonwood trunk.

A few tall towers of purple delphinium stalks are about to open. White center petals can be seen on the lower blossoms.

Some tickseed blooms in golden yellow face the sun on the south side of my garden. Like daisies with more irregular petals and fringed ends.

A red mini rose in full bloom, flanked by two buds a day or two from opening. A pink mini rose colors the background and some long spiky iris leaves, long after their May blooms have gone.

Yellow Asiatic Lily with pollen-filled orange stamens in center.

Golden coreopsis bloom with orange-red spots around the center. A greenish bee sits in the center. Purple Veronica blooms surround it.

🌱Today’s garden beauties.

A red mini rose bud has not quite opened. Five green sepals radiate from it like a star. Dark green leaves in background.

Three light pink peony blossoms supported by growing daisy stalks.

Purple sage look a little like fireworks trailing.

A bright yellow iris with frilly petals and white centers.

🌱Summer fixin’ to happen.

A red gaillardia bud with just the beginning of petals. Another with less color rises on a thin stem behind it.

Some veronica shows a bit of purple color before it flowers completely.

A daisy bud looks like a yellow button as it gets ready to blossom.

A slightly out of focus rose bud still wrapped tightly in green sepals.

🌱A few early bloomers despite the unusually cool (and frosty) spring weather in south central Montana.

A yellow and orange columbine bloom faces down, showing off its spiky backside.

A purple alpine aster has not quite opened fully.

A few early pinks have white serrated edges on bright pink flowers.

Sweet Woodruff is light green in right foreground. Violets with purple ears, white faces, and yellow chins in middle. Behind some purple phlox is visible.
