I write on Kosovo + Balkans; run women’s rugby league Revolution Rugby in 🇽🇰
It’s 35 degrees in Skopje am on my way to Burgas to play beach rugby. Normally we would have a Revolution Rugby team but no money for that this year. So I’m playing solo with Burgas. This was lunch at Skopje bus station burger and chips. I asked for extra onion but he forgot
This was our Kids Day in Zvečan we didn’t have many takers but there you are.
Players heading home after practice. No one told me goats were so aggressive btw. We also started a new team who decided to call themselves the Obilić Golden Girls. No they don’t know the show. I just decided not to tell them.
Meanwhile it was kids rugby “tournament” (Norwegian style everyone wins) for 7-12s in Plementina last night 50 kids and whoever did the whole 6-7 thing has a lot to answer for.
The looks when you tell them yes we are doing a fitness block. Yes it’s still 30 degrees at 19.00. The block wasn’t that bad or that hard and plenty of water was had.
The donor for our Make It Yours ! Tournament on 11 July is giving the players kit including cool bucket hats. The tournament is to raise awareness of registration of property and making sure women and girls get their fair rights to property. This is the Plementina Diamonds
Klina Valkyries playing rugby super early this morning in Klina! It was 30 at 9 this morning so give these young women a hand.
Kids day rugby at the Novak Djoković courts. (He built them) we start at 11 it’s already 28 degrees!
And a bit more of Zvečan this is the view from the terrace in the municipality building
Here’s an example from N. Mitro of what I mean by cultural affinity. Kraš is a famous candy brand from Croatia. These stores were everywhere in ex Yugo. And the man who still runs this place spent years working in Croatia for Kraš. Every time I go here I feel like I’m in 1980s Yugo.
And here’s Pico first League of Ireland player in the World Cup playing for Cabo Verde (Ok @hitchikerspie.bsky.social you might be right about the expanded edition)
I feel like I’ve been watching Hervé Renard who just took over Tunisia in the middle of the WC (!) coach African teams since I was a toddler. Also if you didn’t see NZ-Iran check the highlights out. Who knew the Kiwis had in them?
Our pitch is still under maintenance but the groundskeeper is very nice
This is how happy the kids were after training in the heat. I had to promise food on Thursday
Btw was in Prizren to intro rugby to University students from across 🇽🇰. We did this last year & a couple of guys I taught touch to then, brought their friends & ripped the pitch up. The girls helped me teach them. Then we took the kids to town for a bit of fun.
My latest on my Substack all about the Kosovo Specialist Court and what it means for upcoming Tribunals like Ukraine and Gaza.
