Jillian Segal, the special envoy to combat antisemitism, is the first to appear before the antisemitism royal commission this morning ahead of appearances later today by senior executives from the ABC and SBS.

Segal submitted a statement to the royal commission that the “pervasive perception among the Australian Jewish community” of the coverage by the public broadcaster was “lacking balance” and “the conflict in Gaza being overemphasised relative to other global conflicts [and] disproportionately giving voice to anti-Israel perspectives, which exacerbated the prevalence of antisemitism in Australia and the conflation of Jewish identity with the state of Israel”.

She said:

[There is a] very strongly held perception from the Jewish community that the way in which the Gaza conflict, in particular, and the activities that are going on in the Middle East are reported have created an impression of great negativity about Israel.

It’s a very serious perception that a community under attack here in Australia feels that the trusted national broadcaster is not presenting the situation in the Middle East in a way that they think is not biased and accurate.

My contention is that that whole system is not working to assure all of us that the reporting is as per required, and that’s why I make the suggestion of an oversight exercise, a standing committee.

Segal said she wasn’t suggesting that the public broadcasters shouldn’t “cover matters they think are important”, but “there are also lots of important issues around the world”.

Queensland reverses course on e-mobility legislation

Queensland’s government has announced it will roll back some of the most controversial elements of legislation cracking down on e-bikes and e-scooters – amending age limits, licensing requirements and a planned 10km/h speed limit.

Active transport user groups had criticised the legislation as unreasonably restricting access to the vehicles without any justification, particularly for disabled users. Food delivery companies and hire firms also warned during a parliamentary inquiry that the laws would affect their businesses, or even make them unviable.

Under the changes announced by the state transport minister, Brent Mickelberg, this morning, riders aged 12-17 can use e-mobility devices with parental supervision and those with a medical condition or disability who don’t have a licence will be able to use e-mobility devices under a medical exemption framework.

There will also be specific carveouts for recreational environments such as rail trails, Mickelberg said. The standard for compliant devices has also been eased to make devices that meet any past or future European standard legal, he said.

The speed limit will be reset to 25km/h on shared pathways or 12km/h where passing pedestrians. They represent almost all of Brisbane’s safe cycling network; many riders told the committee they were concerned the low speed limit could have forced them off safe protected cycling lanes on to dangerous main roads.

The laws are expected to “reduce congestion” on footpaths by allowing more e-vehicles to ride on the road, the government says. Mickelberg said:

The legislation will pass later this week to take effect on 1 July.

Tim Wilson is back and asks the PM about Janet from Queensland, who set up a discretionary trust for her child with Down’s syndrome.

The PM says that there is an exemption in the 30% tax for vulnerable people and that the opposition shouldn’t be scaring people to score political points.

We’ve made it very clear that there are exemptions for vulnerable people.

Recently released data shows that Australia consumed “near-all-time-record levels of diesel” in March, despite steep price rises and looming shortages due to the war on Iran.

Climate policy analyst Tim Baxter said Australian retail diesel prices “rapidly” increased in March to “around 50 percent more than usual”.

Yet, despite the price hikes, demand continued to grow in March, Baxter said, noting that stockpiling by consumers only “played a minor role”.

Australia’s foreign affairs minister, Penny Wong, has condemned the actions of a far-right Israeli minister who posted a video of himself abusing bound activists captured while trying to sail an aid flotilla to Gaza.

Wong joined international condemnation of the footage, which shows Israel’s national security minister, Itamar Ben-Gvir, waving an Israeli flag and mocking and taunting the detainees, including shouting: “The people of Israel live” in the face of one bound man.

Among the flotilla detainees are 11 Australian activists who were taken into custody by Israeli forces off the coast of Cyprus earlier this week, but it is not known if they were present in Ben-Gvir’s video.

In a statement, Wong said “the images we have seen are shocking and unacceptable”.

Roy Morgan urges RBA to keep interest rates stable

Research company Roy Morgan has urged the Reserve Bank not to raise interest rates tomorrow, claiming that business and consumer confidence is already at or near record lows.

In a statement this morning, executives Gary Morgan, Michele Levine and Julian McCrann argued that “key economic indicators” show the Australian economy “is already in a weakened state, and perhaps already in a recession”.

They said:

If the RBA does raise interest rates tomorrow [this] would most likely plunge Australia into a ‘recession we don’t have to have’ – if we aren’t already in one.

They say their latest business confidence index, released in full today, shows it falling 14.2 points in April to a record low of only 76.5 – below the previous record low which was reached at the onset of the Covid-19 pandemic in 2020 of 76.9. Australian consumers are even more pessimistic, they say.

The statement continues:

A further increase to official interest rates, tomorrow, on top of two interest rate increases by the RBA already in February and March – by a total of 0.5% to 4.1% – will increase mortgage stress, real unemployment and underemployment and ensure the damage to the Australian economy is needlessly increased and a likely deep recession guaranteed …

The Reserve Bank SHOULD NOT make a historic mistake tomorrow and raise interest rates again for a third straight month that will force Australia into the ‘recession we don’t have to have.’

Donald Trump has threatened to withdraw US troops from Italy and Spain a day after saying he was looking at reducing the number deployed in Germany.

The US president’s threat to Germany came after the country’s chancellor, Friedrich Merz, said America was being “humiliated” by Iran.

Trump has severely criticised Nato allies for not sending their navies to help to open the strait of Hormuz, a crucial commercial shipping corridor.

Spain’s prime minister, Pedro Sánchez, has spoken out against the US-Israeli war on Iran from the start, and Rome had played a balancing act until late March, when it refused the use of an airbase in Sicily to US planes carrying weapons for Iran.

Trump said in a post on Truth Social that he and his Cabinet were safe, and that he would give a news conference from the White House shortly.

“The First Lady, plus the Vice President, and all Cabinet members, are in perfect condition,” Trump said.

“We will be speaking to you in a half an hour. I have spoken with all the representatives in charge of the event, and we will be rescheduling within 30 days.”

Trump also hailed the US Secret Service and local law enforcement.

“They acted quickly and bravely,” Trump said, adding that he had recommend that the event continue as planned but would defer to law enforcement.

The US Secret Service said one individual was in custody.

“The condition of those involved is not yet known, and law enforcement is actively assessing the situation,” the agency said.

Footage from the scene showed Trump and attendees taking cover behind their table after shots rang out, as people yelled “Get down!” and “Stay down!”

Trump was then rushed away from the scene by Secret Service agents, after which heavily armed agents surrounded the table.

Al Jazeera producer Chris Sheridan said he heard what he believed to be five gunshots outside the ballroom.

“We could smell the powder. We immediately dove to the ground. It was directly behind me,” Sheridan said.

“I couldn’t tell how many feet away, but it was definitely behind the doors to the entrance to the ballroom.”

The American-born leader of the Catholic church, Pope Leo XIV, who shepherds a 1.4 billion-strong congregation, has confronted a bully who ought to have been confronted a long time ago.

That bully is, of course, United States President Donald Trump.

Too often, too many presidents and prime ministers have opted to mollify Trump, instead of challenge him.

Clearly, Leo has rejected appeasement as an antidote to Trump’s coercion and hate.

Gina Rinehart’s Hancock Prospecting has lost its bid to retain royalties from the mammoth Hope Downs iron ore project and will be forced to pay Wright Prospecting half of its earnings from the project.

In a landmark ruling in the WA supreme court on Wednesday, justice Jennifer Smith said that Wright Prospecting had successfully made out its contractual claim to 50% of past and future royalties paid from the project.

But the court has dismissed Wright Prospecting’s claim to ownership in other mining assets held by Hancock Prospecting.

“It could be found that Wright Prospecting won half of its case and lost half of its case,” Smith said.

A spokesperson for Wright Prospecting said it “welcomes the decision of Justice Smith delivered in the supreme court today.”

Wright Prospecting commenced this action to recover our share of royalties from the Hope Downs 1 -3 mines. That claim has been upheld. WPPL also sought either a proprietary interest or a royalty in the Hope Downs 4-6 mines and has been successful in its royalty claim.

The judgment in the case is anticipated to be more than 1,600 pages long and comes more than two years after the complex legal case went to trial in Perth in mid 2023.

At the centre of the claim was rights to the Hope Downs mining complex near Newman in north-west Western Australia which is a joint venture between Hancock Prospecting and Rio Tinto, and which delivered an $832m profit to Hancock Prospecting in 2025.
