New Jersey Department of Health Cautions Public to Stay Indoors, Take Precautions As Wildfire Smoke Causes Poor Air Quality
TRENTON, NJ – As smoke from ongoing Canadian wildfires continues to drift across the state and region causing unhealthy air quality levels and hazy skies, New Jersey Department of Health advises the public to limit outdoor exposure and to take steps to protect their health.

“I urge everyone to monitor their local air quality conditions, stay indoors as much as possible during this time, and know the symptoms of smoke inhalation,” said Dr. Raynard Washington, New Jersey Health Commissioner. ”Short-term exposure to wildfire smoke and poor air quality poses real health risks. Even healthy individuals can experience symptoms, including irritation of the eyes, nose, and throat or have difficulty breathing when air quality reaches the unhealthy levels currently affecting New Jersey.”

Wildfire smoke is a mix of gases and fine particles from burning trees and plants, buildings, and other material. Particles from wildfire smoke can penetrate deep into the lungs and bloodstream, potentially causing respiratory and cardiovascular problems and other adverse health outcomes, particularly for children, older adults, pregnant individuals, and people with asthma, heart disease, respiratory disease (like chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, or COPD), or other chronic health conditions.

People at a higher risk should take protective actions, which include the following steps:

Stay indoors with windows and doors closed and use air conditioning (with fresh air intake closed and a clean filter) or air purifiers.
Prevent further indoor air pollution by not smoking, using candles, sprays, or vacuuming.
People who must be outside, or if it is not possible to avoid exposure to wildfire smoke, can have some protection using an N95 mask if worn properly.
Advise limiting or shifting outdoor, high-exertion activities.

New Jersey Department of Health Encourages Residents to Take Heat Safety Precautions During Heat Wave
New Jersey’s blood supply critically low at start of second heat wave

TRENTON, NJ – With another heat wave bringing dangerously hot weather to New Jersey, State health officials urge residents and visitors to take precautions to prevent heat-related illnesses and deaths. All eligible New Jerseyans are also encouraged to donate blood amid a critical shortage of blood products in the state.

“We cannot overstate how important it is to take extreme heat seriously, no matter how young or old, healthy or not,” said Dr. Raynard E. Washington, New Jersey Health Commissioner. “Too many lives were lost during the most recent extreme heat weather event. We must all remain vigilant and follow heat safety precautions during periods of dangerously high temperatures.”

Heat safety precautions include:

Stay hydrated: Drink plenty of water, even before feeling thirsty.
Limit time outdoors: Check your local weather report and avoid being outdoors during the hottest hours of the day. If you must be outdoors, stay in the shade and take breaks from the sun to cool down. Wear loose, lightweight, light-colored clothing and a hat with a wide brim.
Check on family, friends, neighbors, and people experiencing homelessness: While some people are more at risk for heat-related illness and death, during extreme heat, everyone is affected. Offer your help and connect others with local cooling centers, hydration resources, or other community services.
Never leave children, people with disabilities, or pets in a parked car: Temperatures can spike to dangerous levels within minutes. Cracking a window open will not help.
Know the signs of heat-related illness: Heat exhaustion symptoms include heavy sweating, dizziness, nausea, fatigue, and muscle cramps. Heatstroke is a medical emergency and can cause very high body temperature, red, hot, dry skin (with no sweating), a rapid pulse, and confusion. …

During the most recent extreme heat wave in New Jersey, which occurred between July 1 through July 4, emergency department visits totaled 387. The visits were by people of all ages, underscoring that this extreme heat can affect everyone.

Additionally, the Department is preliminarily reporting 29 suspected heat-related deaths in New Jersey during that period. These tragic losses highlight the serious public health risks associated with extreme heat.

Some people are at greater risk for heat-related illness and heat-related deaths, although everyone should take extreme heat seriously. These include:

People older than 65 years
People who live alone
Unhoused people
People without access to air conditioning
People with chronic health conditions (e.g., diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and respiratory disease)
People on certain medications (e.g., diuretics, some antipsychotic medications, some antidepressants, some antihypertensive agents)
Outdoor workers and workers who work indoors with no air conditioning
Infants and children
“We remain committed to working with our partners to promote heat safety, strengthen preparedness efforts, and help protect the health and well-being of all residents, visitors, and animals in New Jersey during periods of extreme weather,” added Commissioner Washington. “Beyond the immediate health threat posed by dangerous heat, it’s important to remember that extreme weather tends to create additional disruptions that can have less visible but far-reaching impacts on our communities.”

Blood donors needed

High temperatures and severe weather can lead to canceled blood drives, low donor turnout, and staffing challenges that create shortages in the blood supply.

New Jersey’s blood supply is critically low, with New Jersey Blood Services declaring a state of emergency after the earlier heat wave, severe storms, and power outages resulted in a drop in blood donations. The American Red Cross has also declared an Emergency Blood Shortage nationally, citing an increased need for blood products at the same time that supplies are low.

Blood products, including whole blood, platelets, and plasma, have a limited shelf life and cannot be manufactured, so the health care system relies on volunteer blood donors to ensure a safe and stable supply of blood products used for planned and emergency surgeries and to treat people with critical illnesses. One whole blood donation takes about an hour and can help save the lives of up to three people.

When Lizzy Lawrence was reporting on the sole mystery man granted “compassionate use” of Eli Lilly’s experimental obesity drug, she contacted the White House, the FDA, and HHS multiple times to ask whether it was President Trump. No one answered her question directly.

After the story ran, White House spokesperson Kush Desai posted this xeet: “Because this has to be spelled out for @LizzyLaw_, who has proven herself to be an unserious gossip columnist, this application was not for the President.”

During an appearance Tuesday in Pennsylvania, Trump spoke, as he often has, about his “extremely fat, sloppy” and “brilliant” friend who has been taking a GLP-1 for weight loss to no effect. As a reminder, the man who got access to Lilly’s experimental drug had lost little weight on a previous GLP-1. Trump used to routinely use aliases when speaking to reporters.

Whoever may be the man getting compassionate use of Lilly’s drug, he has pulmonary hypertension, which can be life-threatening.

NJDOH Monitoring Two New Jersey Residents Following Hantavirus Exposure Linked to MV Hondius
At this time, the risk to the general public in New Jersey remains low.

TRENTON — The New Jersey Department of Health (NJDOH) has been notified by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) that two New Jersey residents were potentially exposed to a person infected with hantavirus after this person departed from the cruise ship MV Hondius. The New Jersey residents were not passengers on the cruise ship, and the potential exposure occurred during air travel abroad.

The Department is working with local health officials to monitor returning travelers as a precaution. Neither individual is currently reported to have symptoms suggestive of hantavirus. To protect patient privacy, NJDOH will not release residence information or other identifying details.

At this time, the risk to the general public in New Jersey remains very low. No current hantavirus cases have been identified in the state, and there is no history of a confirmed hantavirus case reported in New Jersey.

Hantaviruses circulating in the United States are carried by rodents and are not known to spread between people. The strain associated with the MV Hondius outbreak — Andes virus — is found in South America and is the only known hantavirus capable of person-to-person transmission, though such transmission is rare and generally requires close, prolonged contact with an infected individual or their bodily fluids. The incubation period ranges from four to 42 days and asymptomatic persons are not considered infectious.

Health agencies in several other U.S. states are conducting similar monitoring of returning passengers. NJDOH will continue to coordinate with local and federal public health partners and will provide updates as the situation develops.

At approximately 9pm on Saturday, April 11, the Union Police Department responded to the Chick-Fil-A on Route 22 in Union in response to a report of a shooting. Upon their arrival, they located seven victims, one of which was subsequently pronounced deceased. The six other victims were treated for non-life-threatening injuries.
This is an active and ongoing investigation.
While no arrests have been made at this time, the preliminary investigation reveals this does not appear to be a random act of violence and that there is no immediate ongoing threat to the general public.
