The figure at the top of the stairs harrumphed and crossed his arms over his chest. “You may leave your trunk. A servant will deliver it to your chambers,” he intoned. “Prepare yourself for an audience with His Majesty. Whenever you are ready, Manuela and Hanneman will escort you.” Ferdinand could hardly make out any of his defining features, obscured as they were in the shadows.
Ferdinand bowed her head. “Thank you, mister…?”
He did not respond. Instead he disappeared into the darkness of the palace’s halls, a quiet tapping accompanying him with each step.
“He was not very polite, was he?” Ferdinand muttered, and Manuela clicked her tongue.
“Dearie, that’s just the way he is. Now, more importantly, if you would help me onto that cabinet—” Manuela hopped over to a wooden cabinet that was pushed against the wall. Ferdinand carefully picked her up by the base and set her on the blood-red runner draped over it. Manuela held out her arms to illuminate Ferdinanda’s face so she could inspect it with her delicate eyes. “Yes, yes, you are even more beautiful than I thought.”
Ferdinand averted her eyes and flushed. “You are too kind, Miss Manuela.” Beautiful was a word that his mother used, one of the words she used while brushing his hair when he was a young boy, before his father ordered that it be cut short.
