My body has finally given out and demanded a full day of bedrest. Reading @vickyacab.bsky.social’s newest book “The Extended Universe: How Disney Killed the Movies and Took Over the World” while I’m laid up and I am riveted! A strong analysis of intellectual property and an engaging work of history.

But seeing as how knowledge and IP have become such wildly profitable forms of private property over the last century and a half—the highest estimates put the economic value of IP holdings in the US as equivalent to more than half the nation's GDP—it seems more productive to ask:
What does IP show us about the nature of property? Does it show, perhaps, that all private property-from the first English meadows fenced off by aristocrats, the first Africans kidnapped into bondage, the first colony founded on stolen land—is in fact a social relation, built on expropriation, and only backstopped by the ultimate violence of the state? Is the financier's ownership of an empty condo building or the mining conglomerate's ownership of underground mineral rights any less fictitious than Disney's ownership of Mickey Mouse?

But Hollywood (which is to say, the consortium of financiers and owners that manage cinematic and televisual images, dominated
by
Disney,
NBCUniversal/Comcast,
Paramount,
Warner Bros., and Sony Pictures) hasn't primarily been in the moviemaking
business for decades—not really. Movies are the marquee commodities that
Hollywood manages as part of a broader intellectual property business.

Throughout US history, IP rights have been denied to the originators of ideas especially if those artists and inventors are Black or Indigenous. From the charges of fraud against Phillis Wheatley's poems, to Delta blues artists dying in penury while their songs created the phenomenon of the rock star, to Black TikTokers having viral dances stolen and sold as emotes in Fortnite, when it comes to Black artists, IP law and management has predominantly been a weapon in the great American project of appropriating value from Black communities while recuperating liberatory cultural energies.

mythmaking that obliterates history, even recent history, in the name of giving total justification to current regimes. It emphasizes feeling over thinking, aesthetics over politics, and appeals to emotional needs and gut instincts and desires while explicitly avoiding material needs and the intellect.- As we saw in the last chapter, these had been longstanding artistic principles of Walt Disney (and Joseph Goebbels). Early in November, Oska Hermasa, & respected senior member of the Berkeley community and Berkeley Police Review Commissioner, in the role of legal observer requested the badge numbers of officers Braunecker And Sifuentes of the UCPD. They responded to his request by body slamming him to
the ground, cracking a rib. He was handcuffed and arrested on the charge of interfering with a police
officer in the line of duty. Those duties consisted of rousting homeless people under new guidelines for People's Park.
On November 8, 300 people attended a speakout and
march to the UC cop shop, which ended with 11 arrests on trespassing charges.
Since these actions, the level of police repression has greatly iscreased. Witnesses and protestors have been harassed and intimidated. copwatchers have been verbally abused and arrested in retaliation.
Braunecker And Sifuentes have continued to brutalize the community, including clubbing anti-war protestors and beating up a well-know homeless activist. Oska is scheduled for arraignment on Nov.
27, 2 PM at the Berkeley Courthouse (2120 MLK
Vay). Come out to support Oska. Defend your right to observe the cops!!!

Totally! No problems with this “cure!” Groups of men talking about their feelings in-person are notoriously free of the radicalizing elements found in online groups of men. This is why all of the problems of men’s violence today started with the invention of the internet.

More from the article: A potential cure, then, is ensuring that there are other opportunities for young men to connect with each other.
Dashtgard added that "there are proven, empirically validated strategies for preventing this kind of violence from happening," primarily by helping young people in general create offline spaces and networks where they can discuss the feelings that would otherwise lead them to online fringe groups.

Yeah yeah yeah sure let’s “jump ahead” of the complaints about the lack of explanatory power of our core argument. A one-sentence sneering aside in parentheses should do it. Once you remind people that men are isolated and lonely they don’t read much more anyway because they’re too busy crying.

They paraded her corpse through the neighborhood afterwards. Just carried her “like a sack of potatoes” by her arms and legs. No stretcher. Every form of revenge I can imagine would be too good for these evil fucks.

Was painting on this and listening to Marie Krüttli’s Transparence album. By the end of the song Dark Belly I was surprised to find tears streaming down my face, my breathing shallow and shakey, and I had to put my painting fully out of the room. Art and music hurts so good damn.
