According to Martin Sellner's Telegram, this year's "Identitarian" summer demonstration in Vienna has in fact been canceled. A little surprising, as there had been talk of alternative routes. Would assume the FPÖ is not unhappy about it (if true). No need for more bad press and internal debates rn.
90 yrs ago today, reactionary army generals declared war on the Spanish Republic, eventually crushing it & ushering in decades of dictatorship. And while the latter ended ~1978, Yamal & co. will still take the field this Sunday to the tune of a royal anthem, under a royal banner. ¡Viva la república!
So Mussolini's Palazzo di Giustizia collapsed in Bolzano today & no one got hurt but fascists' feelings. While Italian fascist architecture is clearly far less ugly than anything the Nazis built, this goes to show that although fascists love to invoke eternity, nothing they erect will last forever.
Personally, I tend to believe Germans should, as a general rule, avoid this kind of posture on live TV. #MAGAWorldCup
On telegram, the Identitarian leader, posing next to a wayside shrine, proclaims "Crusade summer '26 has officially started!" Glorification of the crusades has become a thing for a far-right scene fueled by anti-Muslim racism and increasingly infused with a belligerent brand of Christian rhetoric.
Two days ago (6/29), the "Patriots for Europe Foundation" held an event in Vienna on "Why the Americas matter for the Future of Europe", feat. a Colombian senator & a Heritage fellow. It was the kickoff event for a conference series. Vox's foundation (Disenso) seems to act as a hub to Latin America.
To be fair, er war nicht der einzige Fan dieser Partnerschaft (Kurz-Zitat via @lukasgg.bsky.social).
...and with Spain securing the top spot in group H, updated odds are out on Austria making it past the round of 32. #MAGAWorldCup
Aside from the guide, the EU-funded OPEN COST Action network (www.au.dk/opencostaction) has launched a mentorship program assisting academics under attack and organizes training events for volunteers. Please refer to academicresilience.eu for more information and additional resources. 2/3
Today, a launch event for the "Pocket Guide for Academics under Attack" was held in Vienna. The guide, which the @doew.at helped publish, is a collab by academics from across Europe. 🇩🇪 & 🇬🇧 versions are already out, translations into >20 other languages are on the way. www.doew.at/erforschen/p... 1/3
The FPÖ's signature giveaway during the Haider era was a plush bear dubbed "Jörgi-Bär". Under Kickl, they are handing out plush airplanes symbolizing mass deportations, and I tend to think that actually says less about the FPÖ's own evolution than about the evolution of political discourse in 🇦🇹.
Having the FPÖ's 70th anniversary folk festival and a Böhse Onkelz stadium concert in town on the same day is a peculiar combo. Downtown Vienna is awash with Kickl hats, Loden & Lederhosen, middle-aged Germans clad in black, a staggering amount of unfortunate tattoos, and the occasional Nazi shirt.
The latest issue of the Austrian Journal of Historical Studies, "New Perspectives in the History of Emotions", is out now. This time around, most articles are in German. journals.univie.ac.at/index.php/oe...
Freedom Party: "A Somali [!] guy stabbed someone somewhere. Please sign this petition for Europe-wide ethnic cleansing, drawn up by Identitarians!" (I'm paraphrasing) 2/2
If we rule out stupidity/ignorance as explanations, one has to assume that, by ostentatiously ignoring ~150 years of political & academic debate on the term, Albanese is either trying to distort that very debate by flooding the zone, or simply trolling people who do take antisemitism seriously. 1/4
And yes, that's a tabloid's headline, but the public broadcaster does not sound all that different. "Germany came up empty: Austria elected to UN Security Council" A little bit more subtle, yet more schadenfroh as well. Sure, winning is nice, but the real joy lies in German misery.
Austrian headline (tabloid): "Victory over Germany: Austria is on the UN Security Council" For the average Austrian, that first part is WAY more important. The second suggests Austria might actually have to pick a side every now and then now, which, frankly, seems like an avoidable hassle.
The FPÖ's secretaries-general sat down for an interview with right-wing extremist outlet "AUF1", whose editor-in-chief summarizes: "never before" had politicians spoken "so openly" to him "in favor of 'system change.' Not merely of 'reforms' [...] But of a fundamental systemic transformation". 🧵 1/9
This happened in February 2026. Only a couple days ago, the Dutch right-wing extremist and champion of mass deportations, and her Austrian counterpart Martin Sellner announced collaboration on a project that they are going to unveil later this month at a far-right summit in Portugal. 2/2
Vienna, Austria 🇦🇹: where else can you casually meet up with your old friend, the face of the extra-parliamentary far right, AND receive the full VIP treatment from the President of Parliament (Walter Rosenkranz/FPÖ) himself, complete with a private tour, photo ops, and a social media shout-out? 1/2
