& icing on the cake for this #womensarchives visit to #canadianwomensmovementArchives @uottawabiblio.bsky.social for the #oralhistory & #feministethics summer institute are the #badges or #buttons we got to see during the visit 🥳.
Having an amazing tour of @uottawabiblio.bsky.social #archives & #womensarchives today for #oralhistory & #feministethics summer institute. Fantastic collaborations & outreach work with students, activists & researchers, despite challenges with resources. Inspiring #archivists overseeing this work.
Archivists at Uni of Ottawa holding #CanadianWomensMovementArchives have categorised #oralhistory records to help determine access & #ethical issues re naming & sharing these spoken words, on-going concerns for historians & archivists.
Fascinating morning of papers in Ottawa at LAC for #oralhistory & #feministethics summer school. Theme today is ethics re digitisation of oral history records of feminist community groups & activists. Whose voices are heard or silenced? #archives @womenshistnet.bsky.social @whaireland.bsky.social
📣 Hot off the press! Our #womensgrassrootsactivosm @ukri.org #AHRC Co-I @annefhlogan.bsky.social has written a great article about the project in the Summer edition of @womenshistnet.bsky.social #WomensHistoryToday. @racheljcollett.bsky.social @ruthdav.bsky.social & Anna Muggeridge.
Amazing start to #oralhistory & #feministethics summer institute here in Ottawa with everyone attending introducing themselves. A fantastic mix of inter generational researchers, archivists & activists & UG, PGR, ECR, & academics. Really exited for next 4 days of papers #womensgrassrootsactivism
Well this is nice 🇮🇪😊. Am feeling right at home already on my week visit to Ottawa 🇨🇦.
Off to University of Ottawa tomorrow for week's immersion in #oralhistory & #feministethics. Fantastic programme for #oralhistorycollective summer institute & honoured to be asked to present keynote on @ukri.org #AHRC #womensgrassrootsactivism network. Lots to share & lots to learn over the week.
🥳 Happy to report our co-ed collection, me + @ruthdav.bsky.social & @evecolpus.bsky.social, now has 40k+ hits & is being cited a lot 🥳. Fully #OA & incl: @katebradleyhistory.bsky.social @chrismillard83.bsky.social @sarahcrook.bsky.social @jennycrane.bsky.social ++. link.springer.com/book/10.1007...
4/6. After that, 7-11 September, I get to spend a week @uniofgalway.bsky.social as a Visiting Fellow working with @shannondevlin.bsky.social in College of Arts, Social Sciences & Celtic Studies & meeting Galway members of #ICA.
3/6. And am excited to be heading to Canada next week to speak about the AHRC funded #womensgrassrootsactivism project & innovative ways of capturing oral histories at University of Ottawa summer institute on oral history and feminist ethics.
🧵1/6. #changes. After 28 years working at/for LSBU this is my last week. Social Sciences has been closed & I am redundant. Feeling sad as was proud to work for somewhere that embodied widening participation (since 1892) & research re social justice. Worked with some great colleagues & fab students.
Wait what! The family can be hell sing-a-long-a at the Prince Charles cinema, what’s not to like 😊
Well everyone else seems to be doing it & so I will too! @manchesterup.bsky.social big summer half price sale 🥳. You can get my 'Housewives & Citizens' for just £12.50, worth it for the cover alone (in my humble opinion 😀). @womenshistnet.bsky.social #skystorians
Blimey, a tin of beer has just exploded in the cupboard 💥. Is this another key indicator of #heatwave 🥵🍻.
📢 Next month: new book, eds: Louise Ryan & Eileen Hogan on lived experiences of women's leisure across island of Ireland 1920s-1930s. My chapter is on the ICA & their amazing summer schools. #20s30s @whaireland.bsky.social @womenshistnet.bsky.social manchesteruniversitypress.co.uk/9781526181794/
All set for this evening’s @cont-brit-hist.bsky.social seminar at the @ihr.bsky.social with Dr Katja Seidel speaking on foreign policy entrepreneurship, expertise & gender. Should be fascinating.
& was tickled to see @marg50.bsky.social & Louise Ryan ed collection (with a chapter of mine inside) in the bookshop, think the granny would have approved ❤️.
Beautiful sky over @glasnevincemetery.bsky.social this morning on a visit to lay flowers on our grandmother’s (Maírín Beaumont) unmarked grave in the Dublin Medical Schools plot. Good to know she is laid to rest close to her fellow better known comrades in #CumannnamBan #Afterlives #womenshistory
The autograph books created by prisoners held in Frongoch are wonderful examples of material culture. We are lucky to have one in our family ‘archive’ (acquired by my grandmother Maírín we presume). It has beautiful drawings depicting the camp as well as poems & messages by prisoners as seen below.
End of day 2 working on #WomensLivedCitizenship at @ucddublin.bsky.social with @drmarymcauliffe.bsky.social @tiinalintunen.bsky.social @mmrovlje.bsky.social. A joy to work with great colleagues to further develop this exciting project. Off to dinner now 😋 ahead of last day brainstorming tomorrow.
📢 Roll Up! Two great papers for last two @cont-brit-hist.bsky.social seminars 2025/26 at @ihr.bsky.social. Click on the link below to find out more & come join us to hear Katja Seidel (10 June) & @ruthdav.bsky.social (24 June) speak about their current research. www.history.ac.uk/news-events/...
All set for this evening's online @vahs.bsky.social seminar @ihr.bsky.social where I will share reflections on using participatory research for our #AHRC @ukri.org funded project #womensgrassrootsactivism & hoping to learn about how others engage in this approach. www.history.ac.uk/news-events/...
Always fascinating to learn about what is missing in archives & museum collections. Here is a classic example of the block from which the missing relief was taken by Elgin & ‘his crew’ & now to be found the British Museum. Learning a lot here in the beautiful Acropolis museum in Athens.
Lucky to be on hols & in Thessaloniki today where in the museum I came across a handy definition of symposium. Must remember to implement this for the next time I organise one, with recliners & of course women will be also welcome 🤗.
Happy #MayDay2026 🌸. Image of tea towel design by Walter Crane is from the People's Museum Manchester & read all about it here: phm.org.uk/blogposts/ma...
This article looks really great & my lectures on history of gender & crime always featured the 'Forty Elephants' as teaching at #LSBU in Elephant & Castle meant I could say to the students the ghosts of 'Queen' Alice Diamond & her gang were prowling the streets outside 👻.
Likewise my grandfather put down no religion although raised a Protestant (listed in 1911 census) & had to comply with Ne Temere to marry my grandmother in 1923. He passed down his ‘no religion’ to my dad & he onto me & me onto my kids so we have inter generational ‘no religion’ via census data.
What a beautiful & thoughtful gift I received today from my former PhD student whose fascinating project looked at public health in Bermondsey during the #20s30s. One of those projects that was a joy to supervise alongside @cclements29.bsky.social.
