It's not just that Platner is credibly accused of rape, by multiple people; beyond even most awful politicians credibly accused, Platner is ON RECORD that he WOULD rape someone, given the opportunity. This has been known for a while now.

[Lyndsey Fifield] said [Graham Platner] kept an AR-15 lying around his apartment on Capitol Hill, and would sharpen an ax - a relic from his time working on the Appalachian Trail before he enlisted in the marines - while watching television.

He had what she described as a "warrior ethos' and would fantasize about killing people he deemed a thread, she said. She said he told her that rape was about power.

It was something that stuck with her through the years, Ms. Fifield said.

"He said this a lot: If anybody ever broke in here, I would rape them." she recalled, saying that he added that it would not be in "a sexual way, not in a gay way."

"He was like, I would rape them to show them that I'm dominant." she said.

Asked about those remarks, a Platner campaign official did not dispute them. A friend who knew Mr. Platner and Ms. Fifield during that period said the comments sounded out of character.

The every-incisive @amandamarcotte.bsky.social. It truly is strange how much cultural relevance is put on Joe Rogan, especially by people who obviously do not and have not listened to the show themselves; and have know idea how asinine it is. Its listeners don't talk about the show either.

This grasping is especially delicious considering how, in early 2025, there was a brief panic in mainstream entertainment over the possibility that the right really was culturally ascendent. Trump won after being endorsed by Joe Rogan, whose tedious “comedy” podcast gets millions of weekly listeners. That audience is impressive — until one remembers that, in a country of nearly 350 million people, finding a few million incurious listeners who watch bad sitcoms and alien abduction “documentaries” because they are scared of more interesting entertainment has never been a huge lift.

The right has loudmouthed for decades about how they are going to take over the culture. They love to quote Andrew Breitbart, the deceased founder of Breitbart News Network, by saying “politics is downstream from culture,” and offering another pseudo-witticism — “Go woke, go broke” — that was ascendent a mere year ago. Corporations like Disney and Paramount caved to what they thought was a rising new tide of cultural fascism to replace what has been decades, if not centuries, of an unbroken line of cultural innovation mostly coming from people of color, queer people and effete urban creatives living presumably decadent lives.
