thanks! my point was more that the function and the non-function variable had to exist in different namespaces (e.g. .GlobalEnv and package:stats) for the magic to work. otherwise you get:
got it working but I may have gone a bit overboard with trying different methods... turns out overdispersion is a real issue. (in the figures below, "mi_vglm" was the first method I tried, "mi_vglm_quasi" uses quasi-Poisson to address overdispersion.) guess I need to finish writing this up now
this made me realise I actually have no idea what colour most of the lines here are! probably because when I first came here, the network map was this monstrosity:

hikepicspam part 3: this morning we set off at dawn to head back to the car along easy but uninspiring fire trail and dirt road. stopped for a beverage and lunch at Bright Brewery, home in time for dinner.
