This bit is excellent and we should continually point it out. There is no institutional or structural fix that will allow us to check out of politics.

But there is a deeper anxiety here, and a deeper answer. In the age of Trump II there is the urge—as there was in the 60s, in the age of Vietnam and urban renewal—to put chains on the government in general. To fear power full stop. And here is the unnerving truth we must confront: you cannot safety-wrap a government. We the people, collectively, possess an enormous and genuinely terrifying power, whether we like it or not. We split the atom and made a new sun, once; we may yet do so again. There is no institutional arrangement that could guarantee freedom if we the people consistently turned against it. Freedom lives in the hearts of free people, or not at all. As Abraham Lincoln put it at the Young Men's Lyceum in 1838:

If destruction be our lot, we must ourselves be its author and finisher. As a nation of freemen, we must live through all time, or die by suicide.
It is as true today as it was then.

Last year, Mr. Trump pardoned Wyoming mechanic Troy Lake, who served seven months in prison for violating federal emissions laws for disabling air pollution-control equipment on diesel engines.

Mr. Trump's pardon of Lake was helped along by Wyoming political consultant and lobbyist Jeff Daugherty, who worked with Wyoming Republicans to get on the case on the radar of the White House, said Stewart Cables, an attorney who now works with Daugherty on other clemency cases.

Suzy Lee is somewhat better, but it remains mysterious why she doesn’t recognize that people voted for Trump because they were racists and wanted ethnic cleansing. Come on folks. You’re supposed to be intellectuals.

And then I think that we need to actually depoliticize immigration, because it’s not really the thing that causes all of these other problems that make people want to vote for Trump, right? People voted for Trump because he promised them all sorts of economic goods, right? That the world was going to be better. And people are turning on him now because he hasn’t delivered on those things. And in the context of that, he used immigration as a scapegoat to say, “This is the reason why you can’t have all these nice things, and I’m going to deport all these people and then things will be great.”

And so what immigration has been useful for politically is as this sort of political cudgel. And when we engage in that game, the Left will always lose because of nationalism, and because things really do suck. And if you’re talking about immigration, it’s easy to point at immigrants and scapegoat them, right?

I think that the task of the Left is to depoliticize immigration, to make it like the weather, right? Flows of people will come because the world is messy, bad things happen. People have to leave where they’re living to survive. That’s what it means to be an animal. We move to survive. And flows will happen regardless of however we handle it.

It’s even worse in larger context. This Vivek Chibber guy is saying exactly what the GOP is saying, and Jacobin just publishes it.

So then, what do the two of you think the Left’s approach on immigration policy should be, at least from a general-principles standpoint?

VIVEK CHIBBER
It seems to me a pretty clear-cut principle, which is you should allow only as many immigrants in as your infrastructure and your political culture can absorb. Now, that’s not giving any numbers. That’s not giving any clear laws, but it’s a principle. So in certain countries, that’ll mean a fairly restrictive immigration policy.

Look at South Africa right now: South Africa has an immigration debate, because Zimbabwean migrants are coming into the country. And for the American left, this is important for a couple of reasons. First of all, you can’t say it’s racism. The American left loves to go to race as the explanation for all this stuff. And there is not a racism problem in South and Southern Africa. It is national. It is cultural. And that’s why I said people are now attached to their national identities in a way that wasn’t true 120 or 150 years ago.

So what is corner crossing? When public and private land are arranged in a checkerboard pattern, some public parcels touch only at a single corner point with nothing else connecting them to the rest of the public land system. Corner crossing is the act of stepping directly from one public parcel to the other at that shared corner, never setting foot on private land.

More than 870,000 acres of Montana’s publicly owned land can only be reached this way. Without corner crossing, that land would be locked away from all of us — effectively creating exclusive access for the benefit of the adjacent landowners, not the public trust.
