Data centres, killing animals, maintaining trade with a genocidal rogue nation... These apparently make up the cornerstone upon which the gleaming Irish economy is built, to say nothing of a decision this week to grant planning permission for a block of apartments on the mass grave site at what used to be the Bessborough Mother & Baby Home.
It does prompt the question: 'If all of these industries are so essential to the healthy functioning of the Irish economy, then why does the Irish economy feel so terrible for so many people?' The whole trade-off of building your economy around such awful things is that at least the economy is supposed to be good.
Instead, what we seem to have is an economy that fails to deliver time and again on fundamental basics like grocery costs, energy costs, fuel costs, housing, access to healthcare and whatever else you're having yourself. But at least we're one of only three countries in the EU where you can frighten a hare to death because you're bored

This week’s edition is about hare coursing, data centres, the Occupied Territories Bill, and how we’re prepared to build our economy around such pernicious things… and we don’t even get a good economy out of it.

“This is without even getting into the weeds of what our doubling down on data centres means for household electricity costs in Ireland (currently the highest in Europe) or the global effects on climate change (it's hot out, in case you haven't noticed). Nobody is disputing that data centres are important for the way the current world order is operating. The issue is that the current world order fucking sucks, man.”

There’s also the redevelopment of the Phibsboro Shopping Centre, which is similarly tragic, in the sense that we will be losing one of Dublin’s most hideous buildings. Why are we so afraid of the exceptional in this country? Why can’t we have a hulking, concrete monster that looks like it needed to be built in a hurry after a 1940s firebombing that also has an Eddie Rocket’s right there at the bottom of it? Is this what the film The Brutalist was about?
Granted, we must sound intractable. “No, you can’t possibly change Stephen’s Green Shopping Centre, it’s too beautiful! No, you can’t possibly change Phibsboro Shopping Centre, it’s too ugly!”

But strange as it might sound, maybe it’s possible that those of us who live in Dublin have developed a sort of attachment to the place. A fondness, if you will. Maybe there are things about Dublin that the people who live in Dublin actually like? Maybe there are things that we don’t want to change.
It is therefore welcome that the redevelopment of Stephen’s Green has been paused for now, owing to an objection by a man named Oliver Donogue based in Athlone. Now all I need is to get Oliver on board with my ‘Save the Phibsboro Shopping Centre because it’s awful’ campaign and we’ll be laughing.

That The Giant is a bad idea is precisely what makes it such a good idea. Imagine being saddled with an enormous robot we can do basically nothing with for all eternity? So that generations from now, when only its feet are left, children can play in the baking future heat and tell stories about what gods we must have worshipped in the 21st century. Technological shapeshifting behemoths that, at the flip of a switch, could turn from Serena Williams to James Joyce while revellers below cheer and applaud. History is not the study of good ideas; history is what happens when you put an ill-conceived, nonsensical, 35 metre statue in a place it has no business being, purely in the hope that people across the world will travel to see something because it’s big.
