It's official: #InterviewWithTheVampire has been renewed for S4, which will be called Anne Rice's Queen of the Damned. (I should've known this announcement was right around the corner after getting this S4 tidbit from Rolin Jones.) collider.com/interview-wi...

I would say the biggest clue about what's coming up is: That is what's happened — how do we get there? Because it won't be called The Vampire Lestat, if we get it. My guess is we're going to be doing the books’ titles. You're going to be hearing a lot of people's versions of how this happened, too, coming forward.

Some of my favorite excerpts from my interview with Daniel Hart, including which tracks were cast and crew favorites and why most of The Vampire Lestat's songs (per that penultimate bench scene) were always going to be about Louis in some form:

Rolin’s favorite was “The Loneliness.” Sam Reid’s favorites were “Stained Glass Eyes” and “Brutal Love,” and he said it was mainly due to the fact that his girlfriend just wouldn't stop singing them around the house. The crew really reacted to “Brutal Love” more than anything else. That was a really touching moment on set when people got very emotional for it. I think the first time that Kevin Vitale at AMC marketing heard “Your Biggest Fan,” he was like, “That's the single.” My personal favorites at the moment are “The Loneliness” and “When I Call Out Your Name,” but they change quite a bit from time to time. When I was writing “Your Biggest Fan,” that was the first one where I felt like, “This feels like a song you would hear on the radio.”

We got lucky that I feel like that was true for the songs and their placement within the season, as well. We didn't have to have too many discussions ahead of time, like, “We need this kind of song for here, and these songs have to go in this kind of arc.” It was more like, well, yeah, if you're going to write a bunch of songs for The Vampire Lestat, then a lot of them are going to be about Louis. That's not even a discussion that we need to have. And if a lot of them are going to be about Louis, then they're going to be about a lot of different feelings that he would have about Louis, because it's a very tumultuous relationship. However loving and internal it feels, and however deep it feels at times, it's also going to feel rather shallow. There's so much anger and hurt between them, with each other, and then individually, too, that there's plenty of room for any kind of song you would want to imagine between the spectrums of hate and love.

Allaster broke his staring contest with Eirlana to bow to the Queen, fist to heart, and Eirlana belatedly did the same. Then he pulled open the Library door and stepped through after Eirlana. It swung shut of its own accord behind them, and Eirlana collapsed into his chair. He closed the space between them in one long stride and seized her chin, tilting her face up to the light.
It took every ounce of his control to steady his voice as he asked, “Who did this to you?”
His intensity seemed to still her, and for a moment, he was aware of nothing but the burn of her skin against his, his thumb a brush away from her lips.

There's been increased buzz about the uptick in shows written to be more
"second-screen friendly," with an overemphasis on exposition that enables viewers to keep track of the story even while scrolling on their phones. The Vampire Lestat has no such compulsion, with no interest in toning itself down or demystifying its narrative approach.

Sometimes you read a line in a romance novel that makes you absolutely FERAL and it’s the one that sets up the second-chance sequel you haven’t even gotten to yet

"Nice of you to join us, Meridian," O'Doyle declares flatly. Wren appears to ignore her, but someone says something low from the corner of the room.
"Excuse me?" O'Doyle calls. "Did someone else have something to say before I begin?"

"I said," the voice says louder this time, and every head in the room turns toward Ellis.
"She's still a Byrd," he firmly states. Sage's fingers dig into my arm. Wren closes her eyes like she's stung.

As Nina specifically notes, though (and this isn't even unique to The Pitt), a subset of fans have convinced themselves that shows are being written (and changed) in response to fandom engagement and critiques, which mostly demonstrates a lack of understanding about how TV is even made.

If the writers and producers keep messing with the fandom like this (and let’s be real with all due respect, the audience didn't tune in for 'medical realism™', if that were true, the show wouldn't have blown up only at the end of S1), “The Pitt” is heading straight for cancellation after Season 3. And then, someone is going to have to wait another decade to find relevance in this industry again.

I … (long sigh). This reveals so much about a person’s lack of knowledge about TV as an industry.

The thing is, you don’t need that knowledge to enjoy this show. Or any other show, for that matter. But it’s fascinating to see people opine as if they know what they’re talking about!

“Yeah, if I get the phone call.” Beyond the ability to potentially continue Simon’s journey on the small screen, Abdul-Mateen II reveals he’s more curious to discover what could happen to the character now that he’s seemingly achieved his ultimate professional goal — and has put all of that at risk by breaking Trevor out of prison right under the DODC’s nose. “We followed Simon in one season of a show as he was in pursuit of this thing that he always wanted, and I think it's always interesting to see what happens who they turn into when they get it. I'm interested to see who Simon is now that he's gotten a taste of what he wanted.”

One of my favorite moments from the interview was when Homer told the story about going to #ThePitt creator R. Scott Gemmill with his own idea for Donnie's tattoos and the backstory behind them:

HOMER: I might cry a little bit, but yeah, that was kind of on me. I reached out to Scott and said, “Hey, I had this idea. Shut it down if you think it's absolutely stupid.” But I felt like, at the end of the day, Donnie's journey is about showing up more fully for the team. At the end of Season 1, he left the mass casualty feeling more shame than accomplishment, because, similar to Perlah, I feel like he's been there for a while, and he's been taken under the wing of Dana and Robby. Many people have this story, but you're amongst the team, and you feel like you could be doing more, but you're kind of just coasting. Then here comes Whitaker, here comes Santos, and they’re on fire for that mass casualty. Everybody's there giving it their all, and they're excited by the end of the day. Definitely trauma-bonded in the experience, but feeling like they've done something important. I think sometimes it takes that in life for people to shine a light back on what you do and how you could be doing more.

I just imagined that Donnie goes home to his partner, and she's at the kitchen table, and he lets the day go, and shares that he feels this sort of shame. She's a tattoo artist in my imagination, but she just tattoos these simple initials on his wrist and says, “Look, there’s death, there’s chaos, which is what you experience today, but there's also miracles, and there's blessings — and I'm pregnant.” And then, boom, nine months later, here we go. He steps up in that moment as a father. He steps up for his partner, for his relationship, and he steps up for his chosen family, his work family, his blood family in his mind.

JENNY GETS IT

Specifically, I want to push back on the impulse to dismiss the skill that goes into creating effective sex scenes. It requires a particular competence to create sex scenes that are hot instead of ridiculous, and a competence on top of that to create sex scenes that tell us things about the characters and the relationship. Each of those things, individually, is hard to do, and Heated Rivalry is doing both of them very, very well. We don’t have a line into what these characters are thinking about each other or their relationship, as we would when reading a romance novel. It all has to come through in the writing, the staging, and the acting.
