Today I have been drawing this owl and it’s possible that the part-finished version will be haunting my nightmares

I discovered this lovely Penguin paperback in a second-hand bookstore but sometimes I need to search for things in ways that are slow in this format!

1. What I'm up to and why

Art historians study the "old masters"—Titian, Tintoretto, and so on. Fine art painters also study these same figures. And while the interests of these two species of querent overlap, they are not precisely the same. When painters study the old masters, they are not (only) seeking to understand or theorise about what went down on those earlier artists' canvases and on their palettes and in their heads and hearts and lives and times). They are (also) looking to develop their own painterly skills. They hope to continue —albeit perhaps by way of critiquing or querying or subverting a tradition of practice to which those old masters belong. I think of the “because + noun phrase” construction as a very Millennial thing, but Iris Murdoch did everything about fifty years early.

"Nikolai the carpenter,” said Jan.
“Nikolai come past,” said Stefan, “and see her there down well. All he see is her black petticoats. And he ask her, "You Want to come up or to go down?" She say "Down.” So he
shake well rope, and she fall into well and drown for good. That was funny, wasn’t it? You want to go up or down!”

Notes about “Nigel” started appearing in my neighbourhood a week ago and … things seem to have escalated quickly 😲

We met this sea lion today in Steveston near the fish market on Fisherman’s Wharf. They were apparently hoping we would drop fish and when it turned out we did not have any fish we got some extreme sea lion side eye.
